Chapter 1.4
Increased by
-6 increased by 13 -6+13, which equals 7
Adding Signed Numbers (Different Signs)
-When adding two numbers with different signs (one positive and the other negative), subtract the absolute values and keep the sign on the number with the larger absolute value. Example: -59 + (72) = 13 To add two numbers with different signs, find their absolute values and subtract the lesser absolute value from the greater. The sum has the same sign as the addend with greater absolute value. Ex. -2+6=6 and 2+(-6)=-4
Adding Signed Numbers
-When adding two numbers with the same sign (either both positive or both negative), add the pure number portions (absolute values) and keep the sign that is on the numbers Example: (-8) + (-3) = -11 To add two numbers with the same sign, add their absolute values. The sum has the same sign as the addens. Ex. 2+4=6 and -2+(-4)=-6
More than
12 more than -5 (-5)+12, which equals 7
Plus
3 plus 14 3+14, which equals 17
Added to
5 added to -8 -8+5 which equals -3
Sum of
The sum of -3 and 4 -3+4 which equals 1
