A highly technical audience is a audience that not only has exposure to material that is being talked about, but more often than not, is at the same level or playing field as the person that is speaking to them. An example I can give is say for instance, Apple is having a conference on a upcoming software that is coming out. A highly technical audience would be an audience full of software developers that have previously worked on Apple's software in the past.

Describe a semi technical audience.

An audience which has some technical background in a given field, but not expert level, are known as a semi technical audience. These people, such as college students, know more than the average person about the given topic; yet, it is always best to give more of an explanation than not enough. Be sure that when writing to this type of audience to keep it at the lowest understanding possible. An example would be an experience doctor talking with a medical student, giving explanations of what a patient is experiencing rather than say what their symptom is.

Readers who need most explanation but with simple terms that are easily understood.

The first thing that must be determined is who the primary audience of the document will be. In most cases this will be the people who initially requested the document. However, a secondary audience must be considered as well. This could be managers who will check the document for compliance with company policy. Once the audience is determined, the writer can identify their relationship with them and decide how they would like to present the information keeping in mind things like confidentiality and formality . Finally, the purpose of the document and how it will be used should be taken into consideration. Is the document intended to inform,instruct,or persuade the reader? Answering this question will help the writer organize the information within the document.

When writing a technical document, it is highly recommended that a writer should keep two audiences in mind, primary and secondary. A writer also has to understand the relationship between all parties involved. Knowing the purpose of the document is one of the main elements as well as knowing the intent use of the document.
