National Incident Management System (NIMS)

comprehensive national approach to managing all types of emergencies. provides a national template that enables all levels of government, the private sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together to manage emergencies

Disaster Mortuary Operations Response Teams (DMORT)

a group sent by the National Disaster Medical System to provide victim identification and mortuary services. Teams include funeral directors, medical examiners, pathologists, medical record technicians, dental assistants, radiographers, mental health speciatlists and usppor staff

National Response Framework (NRF)

a guideline for how governmental, nongovernmental, private sector and local agencies will work together in responding to an emergency. --ensures that the federal government can quickly deliver federal support to communities

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

a part of the U.S Depart of Homeland Security and lead federal agency during any national emergency, has the lead responsibility for coordinating a regional response and providing management and response staff. also in charge of providing shelter, food and first aid to victims

response

a phase in comprehensive emergency management in which plans are put into action

preparedness

a phase in comprehensive emergency management that determines how a community or an organization will respond to an emergency. includes organizing personnel, equipment , and supplies; training of personnel; conduction drills; developing communication and warning systems; creating evacuation plans; stockpiling supplies; and forming alliance with neighboring communities or institution for mutual assistance

recovery

a phase in comprehensive emergency management that includes activities and programs to help a community return to normal

mitigation

a phase in comprehensive emergency management that seeks to prevent or minimize emergencies

emergency operations center (EOC)

a place where leaders of an emergency operation gather to coordinate a response

hospital emergency operations plan

a plan designed for hospitals to deal with emergencies

National Pharmacy Response Teams (NPRT)

a resource that provides laboratory training courses in clinical, environmental, and public health laboratory topics

chain of command

a system in which reporting relationships are clarified thereby eliminating confusion caused by multiple conflicting directives

Hospital Incident Command System

a system that clarifies roles and responsibility and enables facilities to handle an emergency without delay by establishing a chain of command and specifying staff responsibilities

comprehensive emergency management

a system that provides for carrying out the functions of emergency management and encompasses four phases mitigation preparedness response recovery

unified command

an approach used in an Incident Command System in which multiple agencies work together to establish a single coordinated plan

scalable

the ability to change the size of response from small to large

mutual aid

the agreements arranged with neighboring communities or institutions to assist each other in an emergency

Local Emergency Management Agency (LEMA)

the community governmental agency that is responsible for public safety, emergency, medical services and emergency management

National Disaster Medical System (NDMS)

the federal system of rapid response of medical teams, equipments, supplies sent to a disaster area; moves ill and injured patients from the disaster to a safe area, and provide care for patient in hospitals away form the disaster site

emergency response providers

the people such as public safety workers, police officers, fire fighters and emergency medical technicians and paramedics who are trained in advance to respond to emergencies

emergency operations plan (EOP)

the written procedures and protocols for responding to emergencies
