a container that can store files or other folders. AKA: a directory
Executable File
a file that can be run by the OS on a user's computer
Malware
a generic term to describe various kinds of malicious programs created to harm a computer or steal valuable information
Live Tile
a graphical element on the Windows 8 Start screen that can display real-time information such as current weather, news, or social media updates
Icon
a graphical representation of a file, folder, or drive
File Extension
a short, unique sequence of characters located after a file's name that indicate the file type (.jpg, .doc, .xslx, .pdf, etc...)
Firewall
a software utility dedicated to examining and blocking internet traffic
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
a system that brings together many types of business functions into one software solution
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
a type of OS interface that allows users to communicate with the computer via graphical elements on the screen (ICONS)
Open Source
a type of software license that permits the source code to be freely distributed and modified (UNIX)
Media Player
an application that allows you to listen to music and play videos (WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER wmp)
Freeware
any software that is free to use without any specified time restrictions
Integrated Development Environment (IDE)
software that helps developers build their computer programs
Operating System (OS)
software that manages the flow of data between hardware components and allows the user to communicate with the computer
Multitasking
the ability to run multiple programs at the same time
File
the most fundamental component of storage that users interact with. A file can contain the instructions of a computer program or the data that you can store
Install
the process of having software set up by the OS so that it can be used
File Compression
the process of making a file smaller than its original size (ZIP)
Formatting
the process of preparing a storage device for use by an OS
Encryption
the process of scrambling your data or storage devices to make them unreadable by anyone who doesn't have the proper key
End-User License Agreement (EULA)
the typical license that a user must agree to before installing software
File Hierarchy
the way a computer organizes files, consisting of drives, folders, and files
File System
the way in which an OS views and manages the space on a storage device
Parental Control
utilities that allow parents to set a variety of limits on their child's internet usage
