What factors benefit self-esteem
-Use positive self-talk ex: Instead of "I'm too stupid for this class" use thoughts like, "My painting looks neat!" -Act with Integrity The characteristic of doing what one knows is right is integrity. When you have integrity,you respect others, yourself and your values. You block peer-pressure. -Choose Supportive Friends Avoid critical and disrespectful people. Have people who support your goals and are positive. -Accept yourself People who have high self-esteems do not think they're perfect. They know they aren't perfect and they celebrate their strengths. Once you accept yourself people will accept you too.
Ways to raise self-esteem
-Volunteer at a soup kitchen or other community service. - Make a list of your strengths -Speak positively about yourself and others -take care of your physical-health -Reward yourself when you do well - Try something new -choose friends who support you and your positive choices -set a goal to improve a weakness -cheer yourself though hard times -have fun.
Characteristics of high vs. low self-esteem
High Self-Esteem -speaks up for self -respects self and others -has confidence -tries new things -feels valuable to society -adjusts to change -feels optimistic -makes decisions based on values Low Self-Esteem -feels insecure -disrespects self and others -vulnerable to peer pressure -doesn't feel valuable -feels depressed -fears failure -uses drugs and alcohol -feels pessimistic -behaves destructively
Benefits of high self-esteem
Increased respect -people with high self-esteem respect themselves by taking care of themselves. They also respect others. They don't criticize or put down. Increased ability to reach goals -If you have confidence in yourself you are more likely to achieve your realistic goals. Increased willingness to try -People with high self-esteems have the willingness to try new things. They don't become discouraged. They don't give up. Increased feelings of value -People with high self-esteems feel valuable to the family and valuable at school and in the community.
