Class 3 standpipe

A combination system that has features of both class 1 and class 2 standpipes

Ionization smoke detector

A device containing a small amount of radioactive material that ionizes the air between two charged electrodes to sense the presence of smoke particles

Exhauster

A device that accelerates the removal of the air from a dry pipe or preaction sprinkler system

Gas detector

A device that detects and or measures the concentration of dangerous gases

Smoke detector

A device that detects visible and invisible products of combustion and sends a signal to a fire alarm control panel

Accelerator

A device that speeds up the removal of the air from a dry pipe or preaction sprinkler system. An Accelerator reduces the time required for water to start flowing from sprinkler heads

Photoelectric smoke detector

A device to detect visible products of combustion using a light source and a photosensitive sensor

Manual pull station

A device with a switch that either opens or closes a circuit activating the fire alarm

Bimetallic strip

A device with components made from two distinct metals that respond differently to heat when he did the metals will bend or change shape

Preaction sprinkler system

A dry sprinkler system that uses a deluge valve instead of a dry pipe valve and requires activation of a secondary device before the pipes will fill with water

Heat detector

A fire alarm device that detects abnormally high temperature an abnormally high rate of rise in temperature or both

Unwanted alarm

A fire alarm signal caused by a device reacting properly to a condition that is not a true fire emergency

Nuisance alarm

A fire alarm signal caused by malfunction or improper operation of a fire alarm system or component

Malicious false alarm

A fire alarm signal sense when there is no fire usually initiated by individuals who wish to cause a disturbance

Coded system

A fire alarm system design that divides a building or facility into zones and has audible notification devices that can be used to identify the area where an alarm originated

Zone system

A fire alarm system design that divides a building or facility into zones so that the area where an alarm originated can be identified

Verification system

A fire alarm system that does not immediately initiate an alarm condition when a smoke detector activates the system will wait a preset interval before checking the detector again if the condition is clear the system returns to normal status if the detector still sensor smoke the system activates the fire alarm

Zoned noncoded alarm

A fire alarm system that indicates the activated zone on alarm control panel

Zoned coded alarm

A fire alarm system that indicates which zone was activated both on the alarm control panel and through the coded audio signal

Cross- zone system

A fire alarm system that requires activation of two separate detection devices before initiating an alarm condition if first single detection device is activated the alarm control panel will usually show a problem or trouble condition

Remote station system

A fire alarm system that sounds an alarm in the building and transmit a signal to the fire department or an off premise monitoring location

Auxiliary system

A fire alarm system that sounds an alarm in the building and transmit a signal to the fire department via a public alarm box system

Local alarm system

A fire alarm system that sounds an alarm only in the building where it was activated no signal is sent out of the building

Proprietary system

A fire alarm system that transmits a signal to a monitoring location owned and operated by the facilities owner

Rate- of- rise heat detector

A fire detection device that responds when the temperature increases at a rate that exceeds a predetermined value

Fire department connection (FDC)

A fire hose connection through which the fire department can pump water into a sprinkler system or standpipe system

Carbon dioxide extinguishing system

A fire suppression system designed to protect either a single room or series of rooms by flooding the area with carbon dioxide

Halon 1303

A liquefied gas extinguishing agent that puts out a fire by chemically interrupting the combustion reaction between fuel and oxygen halon agents leaves no residue

Single action pull station

A manual fire alarm activation device in which the user takes a single step such as moving a lever toggle or handle to activate the alarm

Double action pull station

A manual fire alarm activation device that requires two steps to activate the alarm the user must push in a flap left a cover or break a piece of glass before activating the alarm

Obscuration rate

A measure of the percentage of light transmission that is blocked between a sander and a receiver unit

Clapper mechanism

A mechanical device installed within a piping system that allows water to flow in only one direction

Remote annunciator

A secondary fire alarm control panel in a different location then the main alarm panel it is usually located near the front door of the building

Flame detector

A sensing device that detects the radiant energy admitted by a flame

Fixed temperature heat detector

A sensing device that responds when it's operating element is heated to a predetermined temperature

Single station smoke alarm

A single device that both to text visible and invisible products of combustion and sounds an alarm

Spot detector

A single heat detector device these devices are often spaced throughout an area

Beam detector

A smoke detection device that projects and narrow beam of light across a large open area from a sending unit to a receiving unit when the beam is interrupted by smoke the receiver to text a reduction in light transmission and activate the fire alarm

Wall post indicator valve

A sprinkler control valve that is mounted on the outside wall of the building the position of the indicator tells whether the valve is open or shot

Outside stem and yoke (OS&Y) valve

A sprinkler control valve with a valve stem that moves in and out as the valve is opened and closed

Post indicator valve (PIV)

A sprinkler control valve with an indicator that reads either open or shut depending on its position

Chemical pellet sprinkler head

A sprinkler head activated by a chemical pellet that liquefies at a present temperature

Early suppression fast response sprinkler head

A sprinkler head design to react quickly and suppress a fire in its early stages

Upright sprinkler head

A sprinkler head designed to be installed on top of the supply piping it is usually marked SSU (standard spray upright)

Pendant sprinkler head

A sprinkler head designed to be mounted on the underside of sprinkler piping so that the water stream is directed in a downward direction

Frangible bulb sprinkler head

A sprinkler head with a liquid filled bulb the sprinkler head becomes activated when the liquid is heated and the glass bulb breaks

Fusible link sprinkler head

A sprinkler head with an activation mechanism that incorporates two pieces of metal held together by a low melting point solder when the solder melts it releases the link and water begins to flow

Residential sprinkler system

A sprinkler system designed to protect dwelling units

Deluge sprinkler system

A sprinkler system in which all sprinkler heads are open when an initiation device such as a smoke detector or heat detector is activated the deluge valve opens the water discharges from all of the open sprinkler heads simultaneously

Dry sprinkler system

A sprinkler system in which the pipes are normally filled with compressed air when a sprinkler head is activated it releases the air from the system which opens a valve so the pipes can fill with water

Wet sprinkler system

A sprinkler system in which the pipes are normally filled with water

Sidewall sprinkler head

A sprinkler that is mounted on a wall and discharge his water horizontally into a room

Temporal 3 pattern

A standard fire alarm audible signal for alerting occupants of the building

Class 1 standpipe

A standpipe system designed for use by fire department personnel only each outlet should have a valve to control the flow of water and a 2 ½ inch male coupling for fire hose

Class 2 standpipe

A standpipe system designed for use by occupants of a building only each outlet is generally equipped with a length of 1 ½ inch single jacket hose and a nozzle which are pre-connected to the system

Tamper switch

A switch on a sprinkler valve that transmits a signal to the fire alarm control panel if the normal position of the valve is changed

Automatic sprinkler system

A system of pipes filled with water under pressure that discharges water immediately when a sprinkler head opens

Air sampling detector

A system that captures a sample of air from a room or enclosed space and passes it through a smoke detection or gas analysis device

Deluge valve

A valve assembly designed to release water into a sprinkler system when an external initiation device is activated

Alarm valve

A valve that signals an alarm when a sprinkler head is activated and prevents nuisance alarms caused by pressure variations

Master coded alarm

An alarm system in which audible notification devices can be used for multiple purposes not just for the fire alarm

Noncoated alarm

An alarm system that provides no information at the alarm control panel indicating where the activation alarm is located

Tamper alarm

An alarm that sounds when the clear plastic cover of a pole station is lifted it is intended to prevent malicious false alarms

Water motor gong

An audible alarm notification device that is powered by water moving through a sprinkler system

Alarm notification device

An audible and or visual device and a fire alarm system that makes occupants or other persons aware of an alarm condition

Dry chemical extinguishing system

An automatic fire extinguishing system that discharges are dry chemical agent

An electrical switch that is activated by water moving through a pipe in a sprinkler system

Wet chemical extinguishing system

An extinguishing system that discharges a proprietary liquid extinguishing agent it is often installed over stoves and deep fat fryer is in commercial kitchens

Central station

An off premise facility that monitors alarm systems and is responsible for notifying the fire department of an alarm these facilities may be geographically located some distance from the protected buildings

Standpipe system

And arrangement of piping valves and hose connections installed in a structure to deliver water to fire hoses

Deluge head

Sprinkler head that has no release mechanism; the orifice is always open

False alarm

The activation of a fire alarm system and no fire or emergency condition exists

Fire alarm control panel

The component in a fire alarm system that controls the functions of the entire system

Sprinkler piping

The network of piping in a sprinkler system that delivers water to the sprinkler heads

Dry pipe valve

The valve assembly on a dry sprinkler system that prevents water from entering the system until the air pressure is released

Automatic sprinkler heads

The working ends of a sprinkler system which serve to activate the system and to apply water to the fire

Wire or tubing that can be strong along the ceiling of large open areas to detect an increase in heat
