Adding and subtracting decimals is not too different from adding and subtracting any numbers. It is critical that you write your decimals so that the decimal points align, or you will find yourself adding tenths to ones or subtracting hundredths from tenths. As long as each of the numbers you are adding or subtracting has the same number of decimal places, the addition or subtraction is fairly easy. When you multiply decimals, do not align the decimal points. Simply line up the numbers along the right hand side of the problem. Then multiply just as you would if the numbers were all whole numbers and add at the end. After that count how many decimal places the two factors have (start at the far right of each number) and then give the answer that total number of decimal places. To divide decimals, always use long division. If the divisor has a decimal, you will need to move the decimal point in the divisor and the dividend by the number of decimal places in the divisor so that the divisor becomes a whole number. You may need to add zeros as placeholders in the dividend. Then place a decimal point for the quotient directly above the final decimal point in the dividend and be careful to line up all the digits in the correct place values as you divide.

1). Mutiply the two numbers as if they were whole numbers. Ignore the decimal points for now. 2). Add the number of decimal places in the numbers being multiped. Start from the right and count thw same number being multiplied. Start from the right and count the same number of decimal places in the products and insert the decimal point.

Five Steps when you read whole numbers or writing in words are:

1). Separate the number into groups of three digits: units, thousands, and millions. Very large numbers may include groups of digits for billions, trillions, and even higher groups. 2). Separate the groups with commas. 3). When writing the names of whole numbers, never use the word AND.! 4). Use hyphens in numbers less than 100 that are written as two words. 5). When a three digits group is made up of only zeros, do not write the name of the group.

1). Set up the division problem as you would with whole numbers. 2). Shift the decimal point in the divisor so that the divisor becomes a whole number. The divisor is the number you are divided by. Then shift the decimal point in the dividend the same number to be divided. Write zeros in the dividend, if necessary, in order to place the decimal point. 3). Place a decimal point in the answer space directly above its new postion in the dividend. Then divide as with whole numbers. ( *May need to write extra zeros after the decimal point in order to complete the division).
