Collective action problems for interest groups
collective action and free riding problem. collective action problems exists when people have a disincentive to take action. Ways to solve collective action problems include selective incentives, coercion, solidary benefits, and purposive benefits.People will join an interest group "to support" the cause, but won't actively participate. They reap the benefits, but still don't take part in the cause
Lobbying
efforts to influence public policy through contact with public officials on behalf of an interest group;seek to influence the actions, policies and decisions of public officials, usually legislators.; EX: contributing to campaigns, organizing grassroots efforts such as marches and protests; drafting legislation for elected officials; providing information/data to elected officials.
grassroots lobbying
lobbying strategy that relies on participation by group members, such as a protest or a letter-writing campaign.Instead of contacting legislators directly, the public is asked to "call in" or contact their local council members to express their concerns about the issue at hand.
Interest Groups
organizations of people who share common political beliefs and aim to influence policy by electioneering and lobbying,EX: AAA, NRA, Emily's Lis
PACs
raises money to contribute to campaigns or to spend on ads in support of candidates,can give a limited amount of money to individuals and committees per election. Some of the leading PACS are: AT&T Inc., UPS, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Lockhead Martin, etc.
