Gaiman uses the modern setting to exaggerate the fantasy of the quest for the holy grail. While the story of quests for the grail are well known and is in modern conversation (for example, most people know about the knights of the round table from Monty Python and the Holy Grail), all of the stories are set in the timeline of Medieval Europe. When reading about times past, it is easy to accept what is happening as normal because we do not know how common things were at the time, but when put into the context of today, we can see just how fantastical it is. If the story had been set a long time ago, the story would blend in completely with other tales of the type. The setting of modern times helps to develop the fantasy part of the plot by surrounding the fantasy elements with objects and routines that we all know (for example shopping, gardening, etc).

Analyze How does Gaiman use the setting of a modern English town to help develop the story's fantastic plot? Support your response with evidence from the text.

Mrs. Witaker is characterized as an independent old woman who lives a mundane and repetitive life. She is shown to stand up for herself and what she wants, this is seen when Galaad asks to come into her house for the grail but before she lets him in she asks for an ID. Later when he asks for the grail, she does not give it to him because she likes it. We can see that she lives a mundane life because it talks about how she does the same routine of going to the post office and going to the second-hand store every week and talking with her friend every week at the same time. Later, when Galaad leaves and she has to return to the boring old life that she has, she is sad that there will be no more excitement and change in her everyday life. She is punctual as she goes to the same places at the same time everyweek and she is very calm and collected as seen when she continues to be calm eventhough her situation is very odd with a knight and finding the holy grail. She could be lonely as she gravitates to romance novels and makes frequent references to her late husband. She is authoritative, when Galaad shows up she would tell him what to do.

Draw Conclusions Consider how Mrs. Whitaker is characterized in the story. What conclusions can you make about how she lives her life? Support your response with evidence from the text.

Gaiman uses the three visits to Mrs. Whitaker to develop the relationship between these characters. In the first interaction, Mrs. Whitaker is afraid of letting Galaad into the house. Fearing that she could be easily robbed due to her old age. But after her initial step of trust, she is able to let Galaad in and start building their relationship. She denies Galaad the holy grail and sends him on his way. The Second time she lets him in willingly having him help her with chores in her garden. Even though she denies his offer of the sword in exchange for the grail she sends him away with fruit cake and has him use the restroom. On his final visit, she has built up enough trust with Galaad that she accepts his offer of the three relics. But she denies one of them. symbolizing their first visit where she denies him the grail. But the second two times she accepts his help. With each visit he brings something of deeper meaning/greater value to exchange for the grail. He is strengthening the relationship by giving many gifts. They share more about themselves and their lives each time that he visits.

Evaluate Legends and fairy tales are often structured in patterns of three. In "Chivalry," Galaad visits Mrs. Whitaker three times. How effectively does Gaiman use these visits to develop the relationship between these characters? Explain.

Mrs. Whitaker rejects Galaad's offer of the apple of the Hesperides but accepts the other two gifts because of the connotation of what the apple represents. The Apples of the Hesperides when consumed heal all illness and restore youth and beauty. So if she consumed the apple it would take away her old age. She states it was improper to offer the apple to an old lady. It was rude to offer it to her since while it would be nice to be free of her illness she wants to live her life out how it should be original. She could be content with her life and doesnt want to change it or see the point of going back and reliving youth. It could be very temping considering the connotations that surround being youth again and didnt want that decision and temptation weighing on her.

Infer Why does Mrs. Whitaker reject Galaad's offer of the apple of the Hesperides while accepting his other two gifts?

Her behavior at the end of the story suggests that she has been changed by her experience with Galaad and the grail because while she seemed completely content with her life before, at the end of the story she cries when Galaad leaves with the grail and she will return to the way that her life was before. A lot of the items that Galaad offers her remind her of her youth, the sword makes her think about her husband and the apple makes her remember how it felt to be young. These items might make her think about her past and how much time has passed since she felt the way she did then. The Knight showing up at her door was an experience that made her see just how mundane and repetitive her life is, making her long for something more than what she thought she was content with. She leaves the lamp in the shop because she does not want to meet someone and then have to say goodbye again like she did with Galaad. She rationalizes not taking it because she says she doesn't have anywhere to put it.
