Degree requirements
Acquirements prescribed for completion of the program generally termed to degree requirements
Open door institution
Usually public two-year community college policy that anyone who is 18 or older high school graduate or not can attend that college
Transfer of credits
When a student transfers from one college to another they also transfer accumulated credits
Enrollment
Procedure by which students choose classes each semester. -pre-enrollment is a method by which students select courses well in advance of the official enrollment date of the next term
Text books
Professes notify students which books they must purchase for the semester
Private/public institution
Public institutions receive funding from the state or other government entities -private institution to lower income from private donations or other organizations
Degrees
Rewards for the successful completion of a program of study -associates, two-year community college -Bachelor four-year colleges undergraduate -Masters
Honor roll
Students are placed an honor roll for GPA is above certain specified levels
Concurrent enrollment
A student can enroll and attend two educational institutions at the same time provided that criteria are met. - like a high school student taking college courses
Division
- A administrative unit of an institution -A unit of institution based on the year level of students - lower and upper division or branch of institution - division of student affairs
CLEP
- College level examination program - administered to students who desire to attend college credit by taking proficiency tests in selected courses
Application/acceptance/admissions
-Application is the process by which a prospect if student submits the required forms and credentials to his or her chose an institution criteria maybe previous academic records test scores interviews and etc. -acceptance is the institution if the decision to except the application is positive -admission is the status granted to an application who meets the prescribed entrance requirements of the institution
Pass fail courses
A course that does its grading by letters a grade it by P (passing) or S(satisfactory) -F (fail) or U (unsatisfactory)
Schedule of classes
A list of classes a student is taking which includes courses numbers, Name, time and location
Major/minor
A major is a student's chosen field of study -A minor is designated as a specific number of credits in a secondary field of study
Transcript
A permanent academic record of a college student it shows courses taken, grades received and etc.
Tutor
A person that helps the student better understand of course material and get better grades
University
A place composed of undergraduate graduate and professional colleagues
Audit
A student who does not want to receive credit and of course they may be a visitor. The student cannot ask or petition the institution at a later time to receive college credit for course
Undergraduate
A student who is pursuing either a one, two or four-year degree
Commuter
A student who lives off-campus and drives to class
Financial aid
Aid is made available from grants scholarships and etc. -types and amounts of aid awarded are determined by financial need, available funds, and students classification academic performance and etc.
Course numbers
All courses are identified by numbers such as freshman English 1113 -first digit is the year in which the subject is taken - Middle two digits identify the course with in the subject field -last digits indicates the number of credit hours the course carries - if a course number begins with zero it indicates that it is not carry a credit applicable to a degree
College
An institution of higher education that grants degrees and certificates
Academic advisor/counselor
Person will help you select the correct courses, review the course requirements, help you with any academic problems
Department
Basic organization unit in a higher education institution responsible for the academic functions in a field
Bookstore
Bookstores has books all the materials required in the college course and clothing items
AC T and SAT
Both tests are designed to measure a students level of knowledge in basic areas such as math science English and social studies
Petition
Both the process and the form a student feels out to request consideration of special circumstances
Student ID
Card is often used for identification and cashing checks or other student activities
Catalog
Catalog provides all types of information parents and students need to know about the school such as institutional history, policies, procedures, financial aid,student life activity etc
Humanities course
Class is covering subjects such as literature, philosophy, and fine arts, etc.
Curriculum
Class is prescribed an outlined by institution for completion of the program leading to a degree
Noncredit courses
Classes that do not meet the requirements for a degree of a given institution. -May be for exploring new field studies or etc.
Drop and add
Colleges allows students to drop and add classes. Students usually need written approval from designated college officials to initiate dropping or adding a class.
Fraternities and sororities
Fraternities are for men and sororities are for girls -social organization students maybe offered the opportunity to pledge a certain fraternity or Sorority
Prerequisite courses
Course take it in preparation for another course such as English 1 in English2
Credit hours
Courses taken in college is measured in terms of credit hours one credit hour is one class
Associates or applied science degree
Degree given to students who successfully complete a program designed for a person with a specific career same requirements as associate degree
Associates degree
Degree is granted upon completion of the program of at least two years the degree requires completion of minimum 60 credits physical education or military science courses with a GPA of 2.0
Mid term exam
During the middle of each semester midterm is given and it covers the first half of the semester
Full-time enrollment and part time and will make
Full-time role in it is a student taking 12 or more credits in a semester -part-time student is enrolled in less than 12 credits a semester
Grade point average
Grades college follows -As =4 pts -Bs= 3 pts -Cs = 2 pts
Syllabus
It outline of the important information about a course may include important dates, assignments and etc.
Lecture /laboratory/discussion
Lecture, students attend class and get lectures on class material -laboratory require students to perform control situations that may help them test and understand what is being taught in lecture -discussion, classes offer student an oppurtunity to talk about the material
Extra curricular activities
Non-classroom activities that contribute to a well-rounded education such as Athletics, club's, student government and etc.
Alumni
People who have graduated from the institution
Registrar
Person responsible for the maintenance of all academic records. Such as maintenance of class in enrollments students illegibility for a new rule certification of the legibility of veterans and etc.
Academic probation
Students not maintaining a satisfactory grade point average (GPA) Will be placed on probation for a semester
Withdrawl
Students that withdraw from courses during the semester but they are establish procedures for doing so
Tuition
The amount paid for each credit of enrollment. Does not include cost of books, fees, or room and board
Advanced standing credit
These credits hours that an institution excepts toward a degree from courses that the student has earned elsewhere
Final exams
Usually given during the last week of classes. Exams are given on specified dates or usually listed in each semester's class schedule.
Business office
This office is responsible for all financial transactions it may also be called the bursars office
Junior/community college
To your institution of higher education generally includes a chance or curriculum with credits transferable towards a Bachelor degree
Bachelors degree
Undergraduate degree offered by a 4 year college. The Bachelor degree requires the push of the studies to be sciences and the minimum credit hour requirement is 120 hours.
