Perception

Active process of creating meaning by selecting, organizing, and interpreting other people, objects, events, situations or other phenomena

Covert conflict

Covert conflict exists when people express their feelings about disagreements indirectly. Common form is passive aggression

Interpersonal conflict and its five principles

Exists when there is expressed tension between people who are independent, perceive they have incompatible goals, and a feel a need to resolve these differences. 1. Conflict is natural in most western relationships. 2. Conflict may be expressed overtly or covertly. 3. Social groups shape the meaning of conflict behaviors. 4. Conflict can be managed well or poorly. 5. Conflict can be good.

Framing

Framing rules: define the emotional meaning of a situation. I.e. supposed to be sad at a funeral

Mindful listening and hearing and the difference between the two

Making the decision to listen and be mindful. We can hear things without recognizing them but when mindfully listening we actually internalize the sound waves

Self-fulfilling prophecy

Occurs when we internalize others' expectations or judgments about us and then behave in ways that are consistent with those expectations or judgments

Overt conflict

Out in the open and explicit. People deal with their differences in a direct, straightforward manner

Hearing

Physiological activity that occurs when sound waves hit our eardrums

Stereotype

Predictive generalization applied to a person or situation. Based on the category in which we place someone or something and how that person or thing measures up against the personal constructs we apply, we predict what he or she, or it will do.

Emotional intelligence

The ability to recognize feelings, to judge which feelings are appropriate in which situations, and to communicate those feelings effectively. Skill of being self-aware of emotions and the things that matter to you. Being in situations where you feel like you should feel a certain way because everyone else does

Emotion work

The effort to generate what we think are appropriate feelings in particular situations

Passive aggressive behavior

Which is acting aggressively while denying feelings or acting aggressive. Punishes another person without accepting responsibility for inflicting the punishment
