Camera Operators, Videographers, Shooters (Technical, below the line)

Operate studio and field cameras. Sometimes also do lighting.

Video Operator, Video engineer or shader (VO), (Technical, below the line)

Adjusts the camera controls for optimal camera pictures. Sometimes doubles as maintenance engineer.

Production Assistant (PA)

Assists producer and director during the actual production. Takes notes of comments made by the producer or the director during rehearsals which serve as a guide for the crew to fix minor production flaws before the final recording.

Strike (time line)

This is the clearing of the studio props, scenery, properties, and equipment.

Spill (time line)

This is the grace period to fix things that went wrong unexpectedly.

Actor

a person who portrays someone else on camera or profession acting on the stage, in movies, or on television.

Maintenance Engineer (technical below the line)

a true engineering position. Maintains all technical equipment and troubleshoots during productions.

Notes and Reset (time line)

after run through and camera rehearsal, the floor manager may make minor changes to any flaws in the production

Floor Manager (below the line)

also called a floor director. In charge of all activities on the studio floor, such as setting up scenery getting talent into place and relaying all directors cues to talent. In the field the floor manager is basically responsible for preparing the location for the shoot or cueing the talent.

Floor persons (non technical below the line)

also know as grips, stagehands, or facilities persons. set up and dress sets. Operate cue cards or other prompting devices. Sometimes operate microphone booms. Assist camera operators in moving camera dollies and pulling camera cables. In small operations also act as wardrobe and makeup people. Set up and ready all non technical facilities in the field.

Associate or assistant director (AD)

assists director during the actual production. Often does timing for director. In complex multicamera productions helps to ready various operations such as presetting specific camera shots or calling for graphic effect.

Associate Producer (AP)

assists producer in all production matters. Often does the actual production coordination jobs such as telephoning talent and making sure that the deadlines are met.

Assistant chief engineer or tech supervisor (technical, above the line)

assists the chief engineer in all technical matters and operations. Is often involved in preproduction activities of large productions. Schedules crews and participates in big remote surveys.

Director of Photography (DP) (technical, below the line)

carryover from film production. Takes care of lighting and camera operation in single-camera productions.

Costume Designer (non technical, below the line)

designs and sometimes constructs various costumes and dramas dance numbers and childrens shows in large productions only. Sometimes classified as above the line personnel.

Choreographer (non-technical, above the line)

determines all movements of dancers

Production (technical below the line)

effectively execute the production on schedule and within budget.

Break ( time line)

even when working on a tight schedule it is important to give the talent and crew a brief break just before the production. This will help everybody relax and seperate the rehearsal from the actual taping.

notes and reset (time line)

if there are no major setup and equipment problems be considerably shorter. The available time can then be spent on a more lesiurely rest fine tuning the lighting, moving a plant that interfere with the person in front of it, cleaning the coffee table, etc.

Chief Engineer ( Technical, Above the line)

in charge of all technical personnel budgets and equipment. Designs electronic systems including signal transmission facilities and overseas installations day to day operations and all maintenance.

Technical Director (TD) ( Technical, below the line, )

in charge of all technical setups and operations during a production. Does the actual switching in a studio production. Often acts as technical crew chief.

Producer

in charge of an individual production. Is responsible for all personnel working on the production and for coordinating technical and non technical production elements.

Sound Designer (technical below the line)

in charge of designing the sound track of a complex production, such as drama, commercial, or large corporate assignment. Sometimes listed as above the line non technical personnel.

Director

in charge of directing talent and technical operations. is ultimately responsible for transforming a script into effective video and audio messages. In smaller operations also assumes the producers responsibilities.

Executive Producer (non technical above the line)

in charge of one or several programs or program series. Coordinates with client station or corporate management advertising agencies investors and talent and writers agents. Approves the film budget

Lighting Director (LD) (Technical, below the line)

in charge of studio and field lighting normally for large productions only.

Art Director (non-technical, above the line)

in charge of the creative design aspects of show (set design, location, and graphics)

Studio and field producers

in large operations studio and field producers are assigned different producing responsibilities the studio producer takes care of all studio productions and the field producer handles all field productions

Meal (time line)

it's important that everybody be back from lunch at exactly 12:00 pm, which means everyone leaves at 11:00am even if minor setup and lighting details left. minor adjustments occurs during meal reset time.

Property Manager (non technical, below the line)

maintains and manages use of various set and hand properties such as tables chairs and office furniture. (set properties) and telephones, coffee cups, and flashlights, (hand properties) for large productions only. In smaller operations props are managed by the floor manager.

Makeup Artists (non technical, below the line)

makeup for talent

Audio Engineer

often called audio technician. In charge of all audio operations in production and in the absence of a sound designer, in postproduction. Sets up microphones and operates audio console during the show.

Video, Videotape Editor (technical, below the line)

operates videotape editing equipment. Often makes creative editing decisions as well.

Video recording, Videotape, Operator (Technical, below the line)

operates videotape recorders during the production in small field productions, the audio technician doubles as the tape operator.

Above the line

preproduction and supervisory people

Announcer

reads narration but does not appear on camera. if on camera announcer moves into talent category.

Talent

refers to all performers and actors who regularly appear on video

Music Director/Conductor (non-technical, above the line)

responsible for music group in large productions, bands, person who picks recorded music for a specific show.

Performer

someone who appears on camera in nondramatic activities. Always portrays himself or herself.

Line Producer

supervises daily production activities on the set

Briefing of Guest (time line)

the Producer, the interview host, the PA, and sometimes the director meet with the guest in the green room to go over the program concept. The green room is a small comfortable room specifically set up for such a briefing.

the floor manager and his crew setup cameras and lighting.

Technical Meeting (time line)

the meeting includes the major non technical and technical people. The producer, director, interview host, PA, floor manager. TD, LD, and audio engineer. Director briefly explains the program objectives. This meeting is also to doule check all technical facilities, scenery and props etc.

Preproduction (technical below the line)

the primary responsibility of the preproduction team is to develop the idea for the video and plan its production so that the translation of idea to pictures and sound is as efficient as possible.

Run through and camera rehearsal (time line)

the run through is to familiarize the quest with the studio enviroment and procedures to check on the various camera shots, and to rehearse the show's opening and closing.

Video Recording (time line)

the time allotted allows for a few false starts or closing the fewer the takes, the fresher the interview will be.

Crew Call (time line)

this is the time when all production crew members are expected to show up and start working.

Postproduction (technical below the line)

usually consists of the director, editor, and sound designer. Cut Score, and Print the finished product.

Writer

writes video scripts. in smaller station operations or in corporate video, the writer's function is often assumed by the director or the producer or by somebody hired on a freelance basis.
