Types of cancer as they relate to death
-Lung and bronchus: #1 cause of death -Colon and rectum: 3rd most common -Breast cancer: is most common among women -Ovarian cancer: most common cause of death in reproductive system cancers -Prostate cancer: most frequently diagnosed in me and 2nd leading cause of cancer death
Drug use and abuse
-white males are more likely to be drinkers than any other ethnic group -more men smoke than women -American Indians and Alaska natives smoke more cigarettes than whites -Highest age of illicit drug use is between 18-20 -Use of prescription drugs is the fastest growing form of drug abuse and is becoming a major public health concern -Oxycodone, hydrocodone and metadone represent the most frequently misused medications -Adults between 18-25 had a higher prevalence of dependence on or abuse of prescription drugs
Leading causes of death in men and women
1. disease of the heart 2. malignant neoplasms (lung and bronchus #1) 3. cerebrovascular diseases 4. chronic lower respiratory diseases 5. unintentional injuries (males at greater risk of death) 6. Alzheimer's disease 7. diabetes melltius 8. influenza and pneumonia 9. nephritis, nephritic syndrome and nephrosis 10. septicemia

Life stages of men: young adult
Ages 18-35 -may or may not be enticed into illicit drug, tobacco and/or alcohol use -engage in behaviors or take risks without thinking of consequences -beliefs and actions towards sex, including GBT -HIV -testicular cancer occurs mostly between 20 and 39 -important for CHN to reach out because habits are formed early
Life stages of men: adult men
Ages 35-65 -faced for caring for children and aging parents, physical and economic and emotional demands can be great -reproductive health is an issue: may choose permanent birth control, may experience ED -cardiovascular disease -prostate health: prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and second leading cause of cancer death
Findings of women's health research, initiative and study
current findings indicate that low dose aspirin does not prevent first heart attacks or death from cardiovascular causes in women. however, stroke was found to be lower in the aspirin group
Surgeon General Family History Initiative
developed to teach US residents about their health through genetics; 1/3 of Americans have knowledge of family health history; allows people to understand the medical histories of their families which may help determine an individual's risk of affliction; helps men to address the national epidemic and preventative disorders which show genetic patterns of transmission such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus
Importance of health literacy planning in community programs
health literacy is defined as the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions; it is an increasing problem among certain racial and ethnic groups, non-English speaking populations and persons over 65 years of age
