Data Analysis (Mean, Median, Mode, and Range)
frequency
The number of times a value occurs in a set of data.
data
(singular datum) Information that is gathered by counting, measuring, questioning, or observing.
mode
The value or values that occur most often in a set of data. Compare to other landmarks median and mean.
decimal fraction
A fraction where the denominator is a power of ten (such as 10, 100, 1000...). Examples: 7/10 is a decimal fraction, and it can be shown as 0.7 43/100 is a decimal fraction, and it can be shown as 0.43 51/1000 is a decimal fraction, and it can be shown as 0.051
frequency table
A table in which data are tallied and organized, often as a first step toward making a frequency graph.
mean (average)
For a set of numbers, their sum divided by the number of numbers. Often called the average value of the set.
range
The difference between the maximum and the minimum in a set of data. Used as a measure of the spread of the data.
median
The middle value in a set of data when the data are listed in order from smallest to largest or vice versa. If there is an even number of data points, the median is the mean of the two middle values.
