ASL

According to the Deaf people in the interview what is the most natural path for Deaf to communicate?

ASL is the most natural way for them to communicate their ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

Why are some Deaf parents happy when they discover their child is deaf?

Because having a deaf child means that the parents have a child to pass on their Deaf heritage alive. Also deaf parents are excited to have a child who reflects them

If ASL is the primary language, in Deaf-World why is signed English learned and/or used by some?

Because it doesn't use grammar like ASL, but it is borrowed from it.

Why do most hearing people think that the revolving doors are moving too fast?

Because the Deaf-World has its own pace that it spins at. Therefore Deaf people speak at a speed comfortable for them and act in ways according to Deaf culture which is different then hearing culture and they don't often slow down to explain, it is up to the hearing individual to learn and keep up.

Why does it seem members of the Deaf-World put a higher value on Deaf children?

Because they are excited to pass on the Deaf culture heritage to the next generation of Dead children and give them a better childhood experience then they received.

Why do some parents force their Deaf children to learn how to speak

Because they fear that if their child cannot speak and read lips then they will miss out on the real world. But many people in the Deaf-World find this to be untrue because they have an entire world/culture specialized to them that they love and can thrive in.

Why was Laurel so resentful towards her parents?

Because they tried to force her to speak and make her "normal"

Do Deaf parents always want a deaf child? Explain your response.

Deaf parents love their hearing and deaf children equally but yes they are very happy when they have deaf children

What was significant about Harlan's view of deaf people that made him such a welcomed addition to writing this book?

Harlan's view is significant because there was this stigma that deaf people were unintelligent to the hearing because they could not hear, but Harlan is hearing and from his perspective he sees the Deaf-World as an intellectual.

Laurel explained how her mother and aunt first realized she was Deaf. What event generated this realization?

Her mother was worried because Laurel hadn't learned to speak by the time she was two. Then one day Laurel was napping meanwhile her aunt was washing dishes after lunch. Her aunt dropped a glass and glanced over at Laurel to make sure she was ok and Laurel was still asleep despite the loud sound

How did Laurels experience differ from that of Jakes?

Her parents tried to force her to wear hearing aids growing up whereas Jakes parents worked with him with ASL and took him to deaf clubs etc.

How is the Deaf-World for hearing people like a revolving door?

If you are committed to staying the course, then you are more then welcome, most hearing people go around once or twice but then circle back to their friends.

Why is it important that Ben give his background and the background of other authors?

It is important because when members of the Deaf-World meet, they introduce themselves by giving life-histories so that each can see how the others connected to the Deaf-World.

Ben Bahan graduated from a residential school for the Deaf, why is this so significant?

It is significant because he is a coda and normally codas run away from the deaf culture but he decide to come back after running away and immerse himself in the culture. he has been immersed in the Deaf culture at a very young age, so when he introduces himself in Deaf culture, people will be able to know how he is associated to the Deaf-World

It was a deaf club so there was little noise though there were many people

Not well, in the world of hearing intellectuals deaf people are often looked upon.

When do most deaf children born to hearing parents learn sign language?

Once a deaf child starts at a deaf school.

What assumption did Gloria make about Jake at the beginning of the story?

She assumed that he could not speak because he could not hear, she also assumed he could read her lips.

What term did Gloria incorrectly use to describe her new Deaf acquaintances? Why does the Deaf-World find this term offensive?

She described them as "hearing impaired", which is considered the same as calling someone who is black a Negro. They do not consider themselves hearing impaired.

What did Gloria encounter when entering the club? How did she feel?

She encountered a young man trying to sign to her. She was very confused and panicked because Jake had walked away from her.

When the story is over in chapter 1 what did Gloria come to realize?

She realized what it must have been like for them growing up. Even though she was among all of the people in the club room she felt completely alone.

Why was Gloria worried when Jake was late?

She was worried that the TTY operator had made a mistake when communicating for Gloria and Jake and may have provided the wrong time or location, and Jake was already reluctant to meet with her.

Why when members of the deaf world meet do they feel the need to introduce themselves and companions

So that each person can see how the others are connected to the Deaf-World network because Deaf-World is not associated with a single place

Why did Jake bring Gloria to the club and leave her at the door without an interpreter?

So that she could understand what it is like for Deaf people when they are unable to communicate due to lack of common language.

What is a TTY relay operator?

Someone who helps to relay calls between hearing and deaf clients using a TTY which resembles a typewriter with an electronic display

Why is story telling a vital part of the deaf culture?

Storytellers are the cultures oral historians and teachers and their stories have messages embedded in them about Deaf-World values

How is Deaf culture different then cultures that are associated with a 'native-land'?

The Deaf-World does not have a geographical location, instead it is a people group, "A class or group of people with common characteristics or pursuits and a particular way of life."

What/Where is the Deaf-World?

The Deaf-World is a culture based on relationships among people for whom a number of places and associations may provide common ground. There is not one specific spot on the map where the Deaf-World is, the Deaf-World refers to the relationships among this community and the social network they have set up.

Who is 1. King Jordan

The first deaf president of Gallaudet University. The worlds only university with all programs and services designed specifically for students who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Since there is no geographic place to find those who use ASL, where can one find people who do?

There are clubs where Deaf people meet to socialize or play competitive sports, also I am guessing that the internet helps in finding social groups.

In the deaf club how did they get everyone's attention? Why?

They flashed the lights because deaf people are visual and have to see things rather then hear them.

Besides having some sort of hearing loss, what is the most important characteristic a person must have to be a member of the Deaf World?

They must speak American Sign Language as their primary language

When someone describes themself as a member of the Deaf-World, what do they mean?

They poses knowledge and share experience of what it is like to be Deaf and sign language is their first language.

Valuing ASL and using it as the first language defines members

Are members of the Deaf-World accepting to those who want to be apart of it?

Yes! But it is up to the individual entering the Deaf-World to keep up. Deaf individuals in the Deaf-World will not slow down for outsiders, it is the responsibility of the outsider to keep up.

Are Deaf clubs usually open to hearing people who want to learn more about Deaf culture?

Yes, but there is a cover charge if you are not a member.
