Passive Transport

movement down a concentration gradient, no energy expended by the cell

Simple Diffusion

movement of a solute from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Uses no energy, moving with/down concentration gradient.

Group Translocation

of substances - exclusive to prokaryotes; molecules are chemically altered during transport

Active Transport

of substances requires a transporter protein and ATP; molecules move against the concentration gradient from low to high concentration.

Active

- Needs energy - Against concentration gradient

Types of Passive

- Simple diffusion - Facilitated diffusion - Osmosis

Facilitated Diffusion

solute combines with a transporter protein in the membrane. - transporter protein - move with/down the concentration gradient but needs help - no energy

Osmosis

the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of selectively permeable membrane from an area of high water concentration to an area of lower water. - water is polar through aquaporin
