5A acronym to analyse genre

For Task 5a, you may find the acronym 'CLOGS' a useful starting point - this stands for: C - content / L - layout / O - organisation / G - grammar and lexis / S - style.

5b COMMENT ON FORM

Form: - If + present simple (make), imperative (pick) -subordinate (condition) clause + main (result) clause. -comma separates two clauses as here it starts with subordinate clause a variation of the 'first conditional'.

Task 5 a

Identify five features of the text that are characteristic of its genre. Give one example of each feature you identify. Include features of both organisation and language.

5 c comment on form

Is it countable, singular or plural, hyphenated or not?

My advice for 5A: analyse according to LOGS, not CLOGS

LOGS: lexis, organisation, Grammar, style...just 5! Style Informal written style: use of contractions to e.g. We've; you're and ellipsis e.g. Going overseas; Gives you enough. This makes it more persuasive as it gives the impression a friend is advising the reader. Informal choice of lexis e.g. pick this plan; the one to go for Informal spoken style, as if a friend giving advice e.g. this might be the plan for you, the one to go for Grammatical features First conditionals to give advice e.g. choose this plan if you make...; if you mainly send...this might Imperatives to persuade the reader e.g. bring the net; send and receive messages ...

TWO: the whole thing is a prepositional phrase starting 'TO' and also NEAR the water'. (don't forget 'to' phrases when not infinitives.

What are 1) elements; 2) phrases and 3) word classes?

The three ways you'll analyse form!!! 1) is it a subject/complement/object etc., ); 2) NP + VB + Adv P + PP 3) pronoun; determiner; noun (type) ;etc.,

Does this activity help students practice noun phrases, adjective phrases, prepositional phrases or averb phrases?: Write down five dates....(e.g. 5/2/75) and ask partner to guess what happened 'on 5th February 1975).

This activity practices prepositional phrases

Identify type of phrase and 'head' of phrase: was turning orange

Verb phrase with 'turning' as its head

Adverbials can be expressed in...

in adverbial phrases, in prepositional phrases or in noun phrases. If in doubt, say (one word adverb) is 'adverbial phrase' (e.g. there, privately, perfectly well, first)

Give typical examples of genre related to organisation

nformation is in sections, each related to a specific topic e.g. Text, voicemail The text is organised in a particular order to guide the reader through quite a lot of complex information e.g. frequency of use, number of calls followed by selecting plan.

Prepositional phrases consist of:

two parts - a preposition followed by a noun phrase (at Henfield; on my way)

Also don't forget to state what sort of phrase, and you often forget ...

you often forget to say (PP) Prepositional Phrase, e.g. 'towards the river'. So 'towards' is the head of the phrase (and it's a preposition)
