Differential reinforcement of other behavior(DRO)

A procedure for decreasing problem behavior in which reinforcement is contingent on the absence of the problem behavior during, or at specific times. In other words, all other behavior is reinforced. For ex. a child engages in head hitting will receive reinforcement every minute he/she is NOT engaging in head hitting.

Differential Reinforcement of low rates of responding (DRL)

A procedure used to decrease but not eliminate a behavior. The behavior is not the problem rather it is the frequency or the duration at which it occurs. Meaning we want to lower the rate of behavior. For ex. a student is reinforced for limiting the number of questions he/she asks during an assignment.

Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior (DRA)

Reinforce occurrences of a behavior that provides a desirable alternative to the problem behavior but is not necessarily incompatible. For ex. a child who engages in outburst while in class can be taught to raise his/her hand to gain the teachers attention

Differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior (DRI)

Reinforcement is delivered for a behavior that is topographically incompatible with the behavior targeted for reduction and withheld following instances of the problem behavior. For ex. sitting in seat is incompatible with walking around the room.
