a community

A group of interacting populations (such as elephants, deer, zebra, and giraffes) that occupy the same area at the same time is known as:

a population

All the African elephants that live together in a particular area is an example of:

The hawk has the least amount of energy available to it.

Describe the amount of energy is passed to the hawk in the energy pyramid.

Diatoms, krill, fish, great white shark, and the Orca make up just one food chain, there are others. :0)

Give an example of a food chain within this food web.

One example is: sea grass, leather back turtle, tiger shark, and the killer whale.

Give an example of one food chain found within this food web.

The rabbit population would increase.

If the population of foxes decreased, then what would increase?

The primary consumer population would increase.

If the secondary consumer population decreases, what would happen to the primary consumer population? Would it increase, decrease, or stay the same?

The arrows show the direction the energy (food) is moving (being transferred.)

In a food chain what does the direction of the arrows show?

Cats, snails, and caterpillars are consumers.

In the following list which are consumers? Tree, mushroom, cat, snail, carrot, caterpillar, grass, bacteria

Mushrooms and bacteria are decomposers.

In the following list which are decomposers? Tree, mushroom, cat, snail, carrot, caterpillar, grass, bacteria

Trees, carrots, and grass are all producers.

In the following list which are producers? Tree, mushroom, snail, carrot, caterpillar, grass, cat, bacteria

The rabbit is a primary consumer. The mountain lion is a secondary consumer.

In the image, is the rabbit a primary or a secondary consumer? What type of consumer is the mountain lion?

Black bears are omnivores.

Is the black bear an herbivore, carnivore, or an omnivore?

The snake is the highest on this food chain.

Is the fox or the snake highest in this food chain?

No, there is no scavenger.

Is there a scavenger pictured in this food web? Remember, a scavenger is an organism that feeds on dead organic material.

The owl population would increase.

Look at the image again. If the mouse population increased, what would happen to the owl population? Would the owl population increase, decrease, or stay the same?

The insect population would decrease.

Look at the image. If the mouse population increased how would that affect the insect population? Would the insect population increase, decrease, or stay the same?

immigration

Moving into a population is known as:

The primary source of energy is the sun which is captured by the grass (producer) to make its own food (photosynthesis). The grass is then eaten by the grasshopper (primary consumer). The primary consumer only receives 10% of the energy from the grass. The mouse (secondary consumer) eats the grasshopper and only gets 10% of the energy. The snake (tertiary consumer - third level) eats the mouse and only gets 10% of the energy. The hawk (quarternary consumer - fourth level) eats the snake and only receives 10% of the energy. The hawk (apex predator) receives the least amount of energy in the food chain. Finally, decomposers break down all dead material and waste returning important nutrients back to the soil.

Starting with the sun, describe the flow of energy through the food chain.

photosynthesis

The process by which plants use sunlight to produce food (glucose) is called:

ecology

The study of how living things interact with each other and their environment is known as:

soil/rocks, weather, and sunlight

What are all of the abiotic factors in this image?

A producer.

What is ALWAYS the first organism in a food chain?

predator

What is an organism that does the killing in a predation (the preying of one animal on others) interaction?

The sun.

What is the primary (first) source of energy in a food chain?

decomposers

What major group of organisms is missing from this image?

herbivores

What organisms only eat plants?

decomposers

What type of organism breaks down waste and dead material and returns nutrients to the soil for plants to use?

The mouse population would decrease.

What would happen if a drought (lack of rain) causes the population of grass to decrease? How would this affect the mouse population?

The lizard and the snake are predators.

Which organisms in this food chain are predators?

Decomposers make nutrients available to plants by decomposing dead organisms.

Why are decomposers an important part of this food web?
