What are the 5 links in the Cardiac Chain of Survival? And how many of them are you responsible for as the first responder?
1. Recognition of cardiac arrest and activation of the emergency medical services (EMS) system 2. Early CPR 3. Early defibrillation 4. Early advanced life support 5. Integrated post-cardiac arrest care You're responsible for 3 of the 5 links which are, recognition of cardiac arrest, early CPR, and early defibrillation.
Explain the difference between Cardiac Arrest and a Heart Attack?
A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked causing part of the heart muscle to die. Cardiac arrest, on the other hand, occurs when the heart stops beating or beats too ineffectively to circulate blood to the brain and other vital organs.
What does AED stand for?
An AED stands for automated external defibrillator.
What do you do if the AED Pads are at risk of touching one another on a small Child or Infant?
If it looks like the pads will touch, put one pad in the center of the baby's chest, and put the other pad on the center of the baby's upper back.
If adult pads are not available, can you use the Pediatric AED pads on an adult? Why or Why not?
Never use pediatric pads or equipment on an adult. The energy delivered will not be enough. Chest hair can limit the contact between the AED pads and the skin, preventing the AED from reading the heart rhythm and delivering a shock.
When using an AED, What is the first step to take once you get the AED?
The first step you take once you get the AED is to turn the device on and to remove or cut away clothing and undergarments to expose the person's chest.
What is the purpose of an AED? And how does it perform that purpose?
The purpose of an AED is to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It helps deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm.
What are the age and weight requirements for the use of Pediatric AED pads?
To use the Pediatric AED pads the child has to be at least 8 years of age and weighing less than 55 pounds.
It is safe to use an AED on a woman who is pregnant.
True
What does V-Fib stand for? If a person is suffering from V-Fib, What is happening to their body?
V-Fib stands for ventricular fibrillation. In V-fib, the heart muscle simply quivers (fibrillates) weakly instead of contracting strongly.
What does V-Tach stand for? If a person is suffering from V-Tach, What is happening to their body?
V-Tach stands for ventricular tachycardia. In V-tach, the heart muscle contracts too fast.
If you know that someone has a Pacemaker or ICD, How do you place the pads to ensure the safety of that victim?
You adjust the pad placement as necessary to avoid placing the AED pads directly over the device because doing so may interfere with the delivery of the shock. However, if you are not sure whether the person has an implanted device, place the pads as you normally would.
What do you do if a person has Jewelry or Body Piercings where you normally would place the AED Pads?
You do not need to remove the person's jewelry or body piercings before using an AED, but you should avoid placing the AED pads directly over any metallic jewelry or piercings. Adjust pad placement if necessary.
What must you do to the person to get them ready to place Pads?
You must remove or cut away any clothing or undergarments to expose the person's chest.
Why must you stand clear and make sure no one is touching the victim when the AED is analyzing?
You must stand clear and make sure no one is touching the victim when the AED is analyzing because you might prevent the AED from analyzing the heart rhythm properly and you or someone else could be injured by the shock.
Where do you place the AED Pads on a person?
You place one AED pad on the upper right side of the person's chest and the other pad on the lower left side of the person's chest below the armpit.
