Excretion

Perspiration from the sweat glands is excreted through the skin, sweat takes salt and chemicals with it.

Absorption

Some ingredients can be absorbed by the outer layers of the skin but very few can penetrate the dermis. Small amounts of fatty materials may be absorbed between the cells and through the hair follicles and oil gland openings.

Sensation

Stimulating different sensory nerve endings, skin responds to heat, cold, touch, pressure and pain. Sends messages. To the brain. Some are located near hair follicles.

Secretion

Sebum is secreted by oil glands, this oil lubricates the skin keeping it soft and pliable. Also keeps hair soft. Emotional stress and hormonal imbalances can increase flow of sebum.

Heat regulation

Skin protects the body from the environment. Normal body temperature is about 98.6 degrees F. As changes occur in the outside temperature, makes necessary adjustments to the body.

Protection

The skin protects the body from injury and bacterial invasion. The outermost layer of the epidermis is rendered water-resistant by a thin layer of sebum and fatty lipids. Resistant to wide variations in temperature, minor injuries, chemical active substances and many forms of bacteria.
