Genes: Our Codes for Life
Genes
- the building blocks of heredity and development - part of DNA molecules, which are found in chromosomes in the nuclei of cells
What is the difference between chromosomes, DNA, and genes?
A DNA is a molecule that carries the genetic code that determines the characteristics of a living thing. A gene is a short section of the DNA. Each gene codes for a specific protein by specifying the order in which amino acids must be joined together. The cell's nucleus contains the chromosome made from long DNA molecules.
DNA
a spiraling, complex molecule containing genes
Genome
the complete instructions for making an organism, consisting of all the genetic material in that organism's chromosomes
Behavior genetics
the study of the relative power and limits of genetic and environmental influences on behavior
Chromosome
threadlike structure made largely of DNA molecules
