Veterinary professionals regard ____________ restraint as the least desirable method because it can mask symptoms and interfere with diagnostic testing.

Chemical

A fellow veterinary technician student tells you that animals undergoing examination should be be restrained with maximum force to make sure they don't get away. What's your response, and why?

Intense force is not necessary for an animal to be restrained, we'll need just enough to keep them calm. Each animal will require their own form of restraint due to species and anatomy.

_____________ restraint is least distressing to the animal.

Manual

Name and describe the three major categories of restraint techniques.

Manual restraint which is the preferred method of restraint and works well with most all species and using force is not recommended. Mechanical restraint is recommended when needing to use force. It uses equipment such as leashes, collars, restraint bags, and poles and most are designed for a specific species. Chemical restraints are sedatives, tranquilizers, and anesthetics and are the least desired form of restraint as they can interfere with diagnosis. Only the veterinarian can authorize the chemical restraint.
