Left Atrioventricular Valve (Bicuspid) (Mitral)

, is a dual-flap valve in the heart that lies between the left atrium and the left ventricle. opens to increased pressure as the left atrium fills with blood. Blood flows through into the left ventricle as the heart expands (diastole).

Aortic Semilunar Valve

Next, the left ventricle pumps blood through the aortic semilunar valve into the aorta. The aorta is the largest blood vessel in your body and carries blood with oxygen from the heart to the body.

Chordae Tendinae

colloquially known as the heart strings, are cord-like tendons that connect the papillary muscles to the tricuspid valve and the mitral valve in the heart.

Cardiac Skeleton

fibrous skeleton of the heart, is a high density single structure of connective tissue that forms and anchors the valves and influences the forces exerted through them.

Right Atrioventricular Valve (Tricuspid)

is on the right dorsal side of the mammalian heart, between the right atrium and the right ventricle. The function of the valve is to prevent back flow of blood into the right atrium.

Pulmonary Semilunar Valve

located at the connections between the pulmonary artery and the right ventricle, and the aorta and the left ventricle. These valves allow blood to be pumped forward into the arteries, but prevent backflow of blood from the arteries into the ventricles.

Papillary Muscles

located in the ventricles of the heart. They attach to the cusps of the atrioventricular valves (also known as the mitral and tricuspid valves) via the chordae tendineae and contract to prevent inversion or prolapse of these valves on systole (or ventricular contraction).

Heart Valves

normally allows blood to flow in only one direction through the heart.
