heat

Thermal energy that moves from a hotter object to a cooler one 3 ways to move are conduction convection and radiation

electromagnetic waves

Rays from the sun, Move through the vacuum of space Classified according to wavelength, or distance between waves Energy from the sun travel to Earth in the form of visible light and infrared radiation A smaller amount arrives as ultraviolet radiation

visible light

the light you can see

scattering

the process in which light is reflected in all directions and explains why rhe sky is blue

thermal energy

The total energy of motion in the partical sof a substance.

conduction

A type of movement of heat where 2 objects are touching (hot to cold)

thermometer

An instrement that measures temperature

How is heat transfered?

Heat moves in three ways 1) conduction a warm object touches the cooler object and moves its heat to the cooler one example a warm hand touching cool steel. Convection is heat moving through a liquid or gas. Examplew using a convection oven to cook food or boiling water. 3) heat moving through electromagnetic waves. example cooking food in a microwave, heat from the sun fire.

Describe what happens to the sun's energy as it reaches earths atmosphere?

50% of the suns energy gets aborbwed by land and water; the rest of the suns energy gets absorbed by clouds and water; it also gets absorbed by gasses in the air.

convection

A type of movement of heat through a fluid (liquid or gas)

How do the three types of heat tranfer work together to heat the troposphere?

Convection produces the most heat in the troposphere where air gets warm getts less dense and it rises it cools down gets less dense then sinks.(convection currents) Radiation from the sun heats earths surface and gasses conduction occures when the suns energy heats the land/water and gets absorbed by the molocules touching one another.

temperature

The average ammount of energy of motion of each partical in a substance.

How does the greenhouse effect affect life on earth?

The greenhouse effect is a natural process in which the suns energy gets absorbed by land and water and it turns that to energy to heat (infered radiation) the heat goes back into the atmosphere but does not go very far because it gets absorbed by gases in the air If there is no greenhouse effect the earth would be cold.

convection currents

The major way air is heated in our troposphere. warm air

greenhouse effect

a natural process in which gasses absorbs the Suns energy and changes to heat.

What are the three forms of radiation from the sun and how is each one different?

a)infered radiation felt as heat; invisable b) Visable light the energy we can see mixture of the colors in the color spectrum. c) Ultraviolete radiation invisable but we can see the effects through sun burns skin cancer, and catracts.

radiation

energy that is radiated or transmitted in the form of rays or waves or particles

infered radiation

felt as heat, invisable

ultraviolet radiation

harmful, a type of energy that comes to Earth from the Sun, can damage skin and cause cancer, and is mostly absorbed by the ozone layer wavelenghts are shorter than visable light
