What is the difference between qualitative data and quantitative data?

Qualitative data consist of values that can be placed into nonnumerical categories, while quantitative data consist of values representing counts or measurements.

For the data described below, identify the level of measurement as nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio. The total numbers of branch locations of different banks

Ratio

State whether the data described below are discrete or continuous, and explain why. The percentages of houses that have a colonial style in different cities.

The data are continuous because the data can take on any value in an interval

State whether the data described below are discrete or continuous, and explain why. The circumferences (in inches) of people's heads

The data are continuous because the data can take on any value in an interval.

State whether the data described below are discrete or continuous, and explain why. The number of guests at different parties.

The data are discrete because the data can only take on specific values

Determine whether the data described below are qualitative or quantitative and explain why. In studying different historical periods, a historian classifies each as either stable or unstable.

The data are qualitative because they don't measure or count anything

Determine whether the data described below are qualitative or quantitative and explain why. The brands of peanut butter eaten in households surveyed by a consumer research company.

The data are qualitative because they don't measure or count anything.

Determine whether the data described below are qualitative or quantitative and explain why. The health insurance statuses (insured or uninsured) of randomly selected college students.

The data are qualitative because they don't measure or count anything.

Determine whether the data described below are qualitative or quantitative and explain why. The times of birth of babies born at a certain hospital.

The data are quantitative because they consist of counts or measurements.

Determine whether the data described below are qualitative or quantitative and also identify their level of measurement. If the data are quantitative, state whether they are continuous or discrete, and give a brief explanation. The salaries of analysts at a government agency are used to determine their pension plans. 1. The data are _________________ and are at the ______ level of measurement because the date ____ counts or measurements and ________________________________. 2. If the data are quantitative, state whether they are continuous or discrete, and give a brief explanation.

1. quantitative, ratio, are, have a true zero point 2. The data are discrete because the salary can only be a whole number

What do we mean by data at the nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio levels of measurement?

The nominal level of measurement is characterized by data that consist of names, labels, or categories only. The data are qualitative and cannot be ranked or ordered. The ordinal level of measurement applies to qualitative data that can be arranged in some order (such as low to high). It generally does not make sense to do computations with data at the ordinal level of measurement. The interval level of measurement applies to quantitative data for which intervals are meaningful, but ratios are not. Data at this level have an arbitrary zero point. The ratio level of measurement applies to quantitative data for which both intervals and ratios are meaningful. Data at this level have a true zero point.

Determine which of the four levels of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio) is most appropriate for the data below. Types of movies (drama, comedy, adventure, documentary, etc.)

The nominal level of measurement is most appropriate because the data cannot be ordered

Determine whether the statement makes sense (or is clearly true) or does not make sense (or is clearly false). Explain Los Angeles reached a temperature of 100 degrees F today, which was twice as hot as the 50 degrees F in Denver.

This statement does not make sense because, while the data are quantitative, the corresponding measurement has an arbitrary zero point, implying that ratios between values are not meaningful.

For the data described below, identify the level of measurement as nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio. The most common names in different countries

nominal

For the data described below, identify the level of measurement as nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio. The distances (in miles) of different movie theaters from a person's house

ratio
