Resume

A summary of a job seeker's personal information that includes career objective, education, skills, work experience, recognition, etc.

Work Experience

Always list the most recent employer first and give accurate, detailed, and complete information about your employers such as employment dates, phone numbers, job titles, etc. Use your resume as a guide and explain any gaps in your work history.

Fill In The Blanks

Answer all the questions completely, accurately, and truthfully. When something does not apply to you, write N/A (not applicable). Check for errors, completeness, and accuracy.

Position

Avoid the word anything. Put a specific job down to show that you are not desperate and have a goal in mind.

Education And Training

List academic, vocational, and professional education and schools attended. Be prepared to attach copies of certificates or other documents. If you are planning to attend college, write "Plan to attend __________ College" and when.

References

Most employers will call or email references to obtain dates worked and if they would re-hire you. Do not use relatives; name 3 or more people like teachers, counselors, ministers, and so on who speak highly of you (after getting their permission).

Job Application

A form that asks questions about a job seeker's skills, work experience, and education.

Reason For Leaving

Be careful when giving a reason for leaving a previous job and do not say anything negative. Acceptable answers include: "school conflict" "conflicting hours" "better opportunities for advancement" "seasonal employment" etc.

Body Language

Gestures, postures, and eye contact used to express yourself.

Read Carefully

Read the entire form carefully and know what is being asked before filling it out. Employers may use it to judge how carefully you follow instructions and act in the workplace.

Ink/Type

Write clearly in blue or black ink or type the application in blue or black.

Last Details

Sign your name and include the current date. Check that you have completed the application completely. If you are asked when you can begin work, make sure to put at least two weeks' notice to your current employer (if applicable).

Salary Expected

Employers may use this to screen out applicants, so it is best to answer with a salary range or "negotiable" even if you know the salary. This leaves you room to negotiate a higher wage.

Job Interview

Formal meeting about a possible job between a job seeker and employer.

Personal Information

If you do not have a phone, give a number where messages can be left for you.

Special Job-Related Skills

Use action verbs to list your job-related skills, training, licenses, and accomplishments. List the types of tools and equipment you used to help you stand out from other applicants. The job description on the form can provide clues about important skills.

Picking It Up

When you pick up or drop off an application, be prepared for an interview just in case they ask you for one. Dress appropriately to make a good first impression -- you only get one chance to.
