Administrative supports include maintenance of case files, creating documents that are editable, providing training to case managers, creating contracts with service providers. Administration provides goals, policies and resources.

Define internal barriers and list 4 common patterns. (Ballew & Mink, Chpt 1, pp. 13-35)

Beliefs attitudes or values held by the client Pessimism: Those people who think of themselves as worthless or responsible for everything that goes wrong. They act as though their problems are so bad that nobody can help. Criticism: critics and fault finders. Think of themselves as superior, and when things go wrong, it must be somebody else's fault. Fatalism: act as though life is chaotic and unpredictable. Think there is no point in planning and so tend to have recurring crises. They are often impulsive and poor planners Cynicism: behave in a detached manner. Their behavior often appears to be proper, correct and reasonable. They behave as though they do not need help.

List the dual emphasis of case management and how it relates to individual consumers and their specific needs.(Ballew & Mink, Chpt 1, pp. 1-13)

Case Management is the only method that addresses the whole picture. Its dual emphasis is on the network of services needed by multi-problem clients and the interaction between members of the network. Case management is certainly concerned with individual service, but the techniques and strategies it employs focus on the mix or service and the way these services relate to each other rather than on the individual service

Describe 3 major strategies for overcoming external barriers. (Ballew & Mink, Chpt 1, pp. 13-35)

Connecting: activities which initiate new relationships with helpers Negotiation: activities designed to improve existing connections between client family and a helper Advocacy: activities where the case manager intercedes on behalf of a client who is in conflict with some element in the environment which is seen as persecuting, intimidating, or withholding.

Describe the role of the case manager in providing direct services. (Ballew & Mink, Chpt 1, pp. 1-13)

The case manager provides sufficient direct services to overcome barriers and connect the client with potential helpers.

Identify the concrete expression of planning. (Ballew & Mink, Chpt 1, pp. 13-35)

The concrete expression of planning is a document called a service plan, treatment plan or care plan. Planning consists of four steps which are formulating the goal, setting priorities among the goals, methods to achieve the goals, and identifying times and procedures for evaluating progress.

Describe the need and purpose of direct supervision for case managers. (Ballew & Mink, Chpt 10, pp. 274-302)

The supervisor provides feedback on strengths and weaknesses.Effective feedback should be behavior specific, objective, regular and timely. Supervisor provides equitable distribution of cases with case managers strengths and neediness of the client in mind. Keep newly assessed clients spread out between case managers. Direct supervision, provides the kind of personalized, flexible and direct support needed to sustain the case manager Supervisors provide and monitor educational needs of the case managers especially with changes in documentations or state regulations. Supervisors provide personal support to the case managers especially when the case manager is becoming burned out. The supervisor provides consultation and backup of the Case Manager.

Define inherent incapacities. (Ballew & Mink, Chpt 1, pp. 13-35)

Those factors that are typically outside the person's control which reduce or eliminate the person's ability to communicate or participate actively in the helping process with helpers. Examples are Mental retardation, severe mental illness, senility, brain disease, stroke and incapacitation alcoholism or drug abuse

counselor, the case managers job is to develop an understanding of the client and to teach the client what they need to know to develop and maintain a resource network for themselves. The case manager develops a relationship with the client which permits examination of dysfunctional behavior. Coordinator: The case manager assesses the clients needs and which helpers are needed to meet the needs of the client. The case manager facilitates communication between the helpers. Advocate: The case manager works to make needed resources available to the client when there is no resource or when the resource is unavailable to the client.

engagement, assessment, planning, accessing resources, coordination, and disengagement

Describe the target populations for whom case management services are designed.(Ballew & Mink, Chpt 1, pp. 1-13)
