Hydrostatic vs. Oncotic Pressure
What is a colloid?
A substance that does not diffuse easily across a permeable membrane
What is osmosis?
Passage through a semi permeable membrane from an area go high concentration to low concentration
What is Oncotic pressure?
The pressure that colloids exert to draw water into the capillary system
What is hydrostatic pressure?
The pressure that drives fluid out of the capillary system and is highest at the arteriolar end of the capillary and lowest at the venular end
Why are these pressures possible within the capillaries?
Thin capillary wall
When will osmosis stop?
When there is volumes of equal solute on either side of the membrane
