Instead of Wikipedia creating an encyclopedia on their own, hiring writers and editors, they gave a crowd the ability to create the information on their own

Is Wikipedia an example of crowdsourcing? Justify your answer.

Infographic

a representation of information in a graphic format designed to make the data easily understandable at a glance; are used to quickly communicate a message, to simplify the presentation of large amounts of data, to see data patterns and relationships, and to monitor changes in variables over time

API (application program interface)

a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications; specifies how software components should interact; used when programming graphical user interface (GUI) components; makes it easier to develop a program by providing all the building blocks

Google Apps

a suite of Web-based applications from Google that includes e-mail, calendar, word processing, spreadsheet and presentations

UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)

a type of aircraft that operates without a human pilot onboard

Smart City

an approach to municipal government that emphasizes the use of IT systems to help increase operational efficiency, disseminate information to residents and visitors, and improve the quality of government services

Smart Car

an automoblic with advance electronics

Drone

an unmanned aircraft; a flying robot; may be remotely controlled or can fly autonomously though software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems working in conjunction with GPS; have most often been associated with the military but are also used for search and rescue, surveillance, traffic monitoring, weather monitoring and firefighting.

Cloud backup

backing up data to a remote, cloud-based server; form of cloud storage; stored in and accessible from multiple distributed and connected resources that comprise a cloud

SaaS (Software as a Service)

Applications (existing): This layer is the one you're most likely to interact with in your everyday life and it is almost always accessible through a web browser. An end user access a remote product. Any application you can access on the web that is not hosted on your local server. Log in then use the app. Ex: Google apps

crowdsourcing big data capitalizes on the human element: the human touch lets you drill down to insights that empower you to thrive in a customer-driven, deman market

Give an example of how crowdsourcing can be used to benefit others.

parking apps, WiFi, city guide app

Give three examples of technology that would be included in a smart city and how this technology might benefit the city and you

SaaS

Google docs would be classified as what: IaaS, PaaS, or SaaS?

They can save lives: can survey damage, locate stranded and injured victims, and assess ongoing threats without risking the safety of rescue teams and first-responders

How might drone swarms change the face of modern warfare? Briefly describe how the swarms are different than single drones in their operations.

IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)

Includes the system services that make up the foundation layer of a cloud: the offering of compute power and storage space on demand. Outsource your hardware needs to someone else! Allows developers maximum interface with the underlying server infrastructure. Developers and IT organizations can use resources to deliver business solutions. Acts as your sever - you rent hardware and scale your server to fit your needs Ex: Amazon Web Service

Gmail, onedrive

Name at least two cloud computing applications that you regularly use.

PaaS (Platform as a Service)

Offers components to build something: Facilities provided may include things like database management, security, workflow management, application serving, web application management, and so on. Users create the applications rapidly at a low cost. A developer can deploy applications in the cloud and not be involved in the server infrastructure Ex: Google App Engine

Mainframe, Client/Server, Cloud

Order the following computing paradigms chronologically (oldest first): Main Frame Computing, Cloud Computing, Client-Server Computing

Advantages: cost savings, reliability Disadvantages: downtime, security

What are two beneficial effects and two potentially harmful effects of cloud computing?

require a license

What can the government do to improve air safely with so many amateur drone flights?

software whose source code is available for modification or enhancement by anyone

What is meant by Open Source Software and how is it different from (or related to) crowdsourcing and/or co-creating?

graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly

What is meant by infographics? Find an example of an infographic that is appealing and meaningful to you. Briefly explain your reasons for choosing this particular example.

Private Cloud

a cloud computing platform that is implemented within the corporate firewall, under the control of the IT department; offers the same features and benefits of public cloud systems, but removes a number of objections to the cloud computing model including control over enterprise and customer data, worries about security, and issues connected to regulatory compliance

Hybrid Cloud

a combined form of private clouds and public clouds in which some critical data resides in the enterprise's private cloud while other data is stored in and accessible from a public cloud; seeks to deliver the advantages of scalability, reliability, rapid deployment and potential cost savings in public clouds with the security and increased control and management of private clouds

Public Cloud

a form of cloud computing in which a company relies on a third-party cloud service provider for services such as servers, data storage and applications, which are delivered to the company through the Internet; can free companies from the potentially expensive costs of having to purchase, manage and maintain on-premises hardware and software infrastructure; can be deployed much faster and with more scalability and accessibility than on-premises infrastructure as a result of the public cloud provider's expertise and existing infrastructure

Wikipedia

a free, open content online encyclopedia created through the collaborative effort of a community of users known as Wikipedians

Open Source Software

a program or software in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge; created as a collaborative effort in which programmers improve upon the code and share the changes within the community

Collaboration

provides an organization with the capability to collaborate with customers or internally via the Internet in real time

Citizen Science

research collaborations between scientists and volunteers, particularly to expand opportunities for scientific data collection and to provide access to scientific information for community members

Scarlet Apps

the Rutgers implementation of Google Apps for Education

Scalability

the ability of a system to sustain increasing workloads with adequate performance provided that hardware resources are added

Elasticity

the degree to which a system is able to adapt to workload changes by provisioning and deprovisioning resources in an autonomic manner, such that at each point in time the available resources match the current demand as closely as possible

Digital Divide

the discrepancy between people who have access to and the resources to use new information and communication tools, such as the Internet, and people who do not have the resources and access to the technology; the discrepancy between those who have the skills, knowledge and abilities to use the technologies and those who do not

Crowdsourcing

the practice of using both the skills and time of underpaid - or unpaid - amateurs to create content or solutions for established businesses

Cloud computing

type of computing that relies on sharing computing resources rather than having local servers or personal devices to handle applications; "cloud" = internet
