The formation of a conjugation tube connects the bacteria for horizontal gene transfer. A single strand of plasmid DNA from one bacterium is transferred to the other. The transferred DNA strand serves as a template for duplication so that both bacteria now have a full complement of the genetic material in the plasmid.
