I agree with his decision, not just because of what Lengel did, but because I think Sammy does not want to end up like Stokesie or Lengel. Quitting will allow him to choose a different path for himself.

What do you think the moral of this story it?

I think the moral of the story is that a person should be happy with what he has at present instead of wishing for another time. Another moral could be to think before you act. Dr. Heidegger asks them to make some rules before they drink the potion, so they will not repeat old mistakes, but they ignore him and then go on to repeat all their old mistakes.

Dr. Heidegger warms his guests of something before he gives them water. What is his warning?

On page 76, he warns that they should, "draw up a few rules for your guidance.... Think what a sin and a shame it would be, if, with your peculiar advantages, you should not become patterns of virtue and wisdom to all the young people of the age." In other words, they should have learned something from their years of experience.

What is Dr. Heideggers reaction to his guests behavior?

On page 79, the three men start to fight over the widow, and they accidentally knock the table over and the water spills.

Describe Dr. Heidegger's office?

On pages 73-74, the office is described as dusty and filled with old books and strange things. There is said to be a skeleton in a closet that rattles when guests get too close to a certain book and a mirror in which all of the doctor's dead patients can be seen. There is also a portrait of a lady that the doctor was supposed to marry who died the night before the wedding. Overall, I would say this is a spooky office.

They all failed at their goals in life

What is the Say Something Strategy?

This activity will help you monitor, or check in, with yourself to see whether or not you understand what is happening in a story you read, stop at the end of each page. Pause for a moment and think back on what just happened in the story. Then, using one of the Say Something sentence starters, write a sentence to make a prediction, make a comment, make a connection, or clarify something about what you just read.
