Lesson 3 : Windows File Management
Data file
A file you create when working with an application, such as a document you create when working with Microsoft Word.
File
A collection of data sorted together.
Folder
A container in File Manager that stores related files that are, in turn, stored on drives.
File attribute
A file detail or setting that can be turned on or off.
Executable file
A file that can preform tasks automatically when it is opened.
Shortcut menu
A menu that appears when an object is right-clicked on the screen.
External hard disk
A removable drive that is attached to a computer.
Disk
A storage medium, including removable media and hard disk.
Clipboard
A temporary storage area for files and information that are copied or moved from one place to another place.
USB drive
Also called a flash drive or thumb drive ; a removable storage medium inserted into a computer by way of a USB port to contain files.
Recycle Bin
An area on the hard disk that holds deleted files until they are removed permanently.
Shortcut
An icon or a tile that provides a quick way to preform an action such as opening a folder or a file.
Contextual tab
Contains options related to a current task or location. A contextual tab appears when certain libraries, such as the Pictures library, are displayed.
Subfolder
Folders stored within folders in File Manager.
Library
In File Manager, displays similar types of files together, no matter where they are stored, so that they can be accessed easily.
File type (file format)
Indicates the type of data in the file.
File path
Indicates where a file is stored on the computer by leading the user through the folder and file organization to the file.
Tag
Keywords associated with a file that can be used to search for the file.
Application file
Part of an application, such as a word-processing program, a graphics program, and so on.
Drive
Storage devices such as a hard disk or removable media such as a USB drive or a DVD.
Pin
The act of adding a folder or an application to the Windows 8 Start screen.
Copy
The act of placing a duplicate of a file in a new location specified by the user.
Move
The act of removing a file from its current location and placing it in the destination folder,
File Explorer
The file management tool in Windows 8 used to organize files.
System file
The files necessary for running the operation system.
Root Directory
The location where Windows stores folders and important files it needs when the computer is turned on.
File system
The structure or hierarchy into which Windows organizes folders and files.
Removable media
disks that are interested or attached to a computer such as a USB drive.
