The farm crisis of the 1930s was a direct result of a decade of overproduction. American farmers had increased food production during World War I in order to feed our European allies and U.S. troops. When the war ended, the sudden decrease in demand led to rapidly falling prices. In an attempt to maintain their incomes, farmers increased production even further resulting in more oversupply and falling prices. The U.S. Department of Agriculture obviously behaved irresponsibly by failing to subsidize farmers in order to reduce crop production at the end of the war.
