Occassion

Paul is once again in prison in Rome (1:8; 2:9). This time, he has been abandoned by most of his friends (4:10-11, 16) and was facing almost certain execution (4:6). He was troubled by the actions of some (1:15-16; 4:14) but encouraged by the actions of others (1:16-17). Paul writes to Timothy to express a desire to see him before his death (1:4; 4:9-21) and to further encourage him in the fight against the false teachers of Ephesus (2:17-18; 3:1-8).

Be Faithful (1:1-2:13) Faithful Heritage (1:1-7) Timothy's Ancestors (4-5)

Paul remembers Timothy's sincerity but also remembers the sincere faith of his mother and grandmother. Here Paul is putting the faith of two women on par with that of the great men of his family in terms of its sincerity and effectiveness for future generations.

Be Faithful (1:1-2:13) Faithful Heritage (1:1-7) Fanning the Flame (6)

Paul sees the faith of Timothy's ancestors as a flame that when flamed can grow and be a mighty fire. Timothy needs to build upon the foundation he has been given. Though we know little about Timothy's father, we know that Paul considered him as a spiritual son and also provided a foundation for Timothy.

Paul's Great Charge to Timothy (1-5) Paul's Final Instructions (4:6-22) Paul's Fighting Example (6-8)

Paul uses a metaphor for his death that implies he is "all used up"

Be Faithful (1:1-2:13) Faithful Heritage (1:1-7) Paul's Ancestors (1-3)

Paul warmly introduces his second letter to Timothy who has served now for several years at Ephesus. Here and only here does Paul mention the faith of his close ancestors (the term seems to go beyond that of just referencing Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob). He mentions that his ancestors served with a clear conscience to compare with his later comments about Timothy's family. Part of Paul's service to God is constant prayer for Timothy.

Themes: Faith

Paul's grim situation and unfailing confidence remind the believer to be faithful until the end. Paul was sure of his death but was oddly confident of his rescue (4:18). For Paul, death was the ultimate rescue from evil.

Timothy

Be Faithful (1:1-2:13) Faithful Heritage (1:1-7) The Spirit (7)

Timothy needs to be reminded that God blessed him with a spiritual blessing of power, love, and self-control. In ourselves, it is easy to give into fear, but we have the Holy Spirit within us stirring us up to power, love, and self-control. Paul will deal with these three things in various ways throughout the letter.

Paul's Great Charge to Timothy (1-5) When is this Time? (3-4)

When people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
