Math Chapter 4 - Divide by 1-Digit Numbers
partial quotient
A method of dividing in which multiples of the divisor are subtracted from the dividend and then the quotients are added together
dividend
A number that is to be divided in a division problem
compatible numbers
Numbers that are easy to compute mentally Especially when dividing: Compatible numbers are numbers that can be divided to make a whole-number product with no remainders. Often, people estimate the dividend (bigger number) to make it compatible with the divisor.
remainder
The amount left over when a number cannot be divided equally
divisor
The number that divides the dividend
quotient
The number, not including the remainder, that results from dividing (The answer to a division problem, not including the remainder)
multiple
The product of a number and a counting number is called a multiple of the number Example: Counting numbers by 3's 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, etc.
Distributive Property
The property that states that multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products Example: 5x(10+6) = (5x10) + (5x6)
