Writing Fractions
A "proper fraction" has a numerator that is less than its denominator. An "improper fraction" has a numerator that is greater than or equal to its denominator. A "mixed number" shows the sum of a whole number and a proper fraction.
mixed number
A number made up of a whole number that is not zero and a fraction. Example: 7/5 (improper fraction) = 1 2/5 (mixed number) 2 1/2; 1 3/8; 1 1/5
1 3/8 in.
Find the length of the segment. Write the mixed number in simplest form. a. 1 1/8 in b. 1 7/16 in c. 1 1/2 in d. 1 3/8 in
improper fraction
Has a numerator that is greater than or equal to its denominator. Example: 7/5 (improper fraction) = 1 2/5 (mixed number) 5/2; 11/8; 5/5
proper fraction
Has a numerator that is less than the denominator. Example: 99/100 1/2 ; 3/8; 4/5
How do you write a mixed number as an improper fraction?
You have to multiply the denominator and the whole number then you add the numerator and that's your numerator. Then the denominator stays the same. So if you had 1 and 3/4 you would multiply the 1 and the 4 and then add 3 so that would be 7 and the bottom number (denominator) would stay 4 so your answer is 4/7.
