Mean Absolute Deviation, Mean Absolute Deviation terms
Steps to find the MAD
1) find the mean of the data set; 2) subtract to find the distance each value is from the mean; 3) find the mean of the distances (divide the sum of the distances by the number of values)
absolute value
distance a number is from zero on the number line - value of the number without the sign ( will always be a positive number)
data
group of facts; collection of information
mean absolute deviation
one measure of variability; the average of how much the individual scores of a data set differ from the mean of the set. - abbreviation: MAD
deviation
the DIFFERENCE between one set of values and some fixed value, usually the mean of the set.

mean
a measure of center to describe a data set; same as average; add up the numbers and divide by how many number there are
measure of variability
a single number used to describe how much the data are spread out from the center of the data
