Combining forms for the skin: derm/o, dermat/o, cutane/o Top layer: Epi(meaning above) derm/o (skin) -is (structure) Middle layer: dermis (flexibility and mechanical strength) Bottom layer: Hypo- (under or beneath), derm/o (skin) -is (structure). Another name is subcutaneous (sub (below), cutane/o (skin), -ous (pertaining to)) Tissue is filled with adip/o or fat. Skin receptors in the dermis allow one to pick up a coin or other items and identify them without looking.

Emily visited the dermatology clinic because of pruritus secondary to dermatitis involving her scalp and areas of her elbows and knees. A diagnosis of psoriasis was made. Eczema, scabies and tinea were considered in the differential diagnosis. An emollient cream was prescribed.
