Dose

5-10 mg

Action

Bonds to the opiate receptors in the brain to alter the perception and response to pain. Suppresses the fear and anxiety centers of the brain. Causes CNS depression. Increases the amount of blood the veins can hold and decreases venous return. Decreases preload and afterload, decreasing the hearts need for oxygen.

Adverse Effects

Confusion, sedation, headache, CNS depression, respiratory depression, apnea, bronchospasm, dyspnea, hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, syncope, bradycardia, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth

Contraindications

Head injury, exacerbated COPD, depressed respiratory drive, hypotension,undiagnosed abdominal pain, decreased level of consciousness, suspected hypovolemia, patients's who have taken MAOIs in the last 14 days.

Route

IV, IM, PO

Indications

Moderate to severe acute and chronic pain, severe heart failure, acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema, chest discomfort associated with AMI

Special Considerations

Morphine rapidly crosses the placenta, can cause the patient to vagal down if they have had an acute MI, narcan should be ready to give if necessary.

Class

Opioid analgesic: a potent pain killer derived from poppies. Schedule II Drug: very addictive but has medical uses.
