Is cloud computing better for the environment?

TCP/IP protocols are the fundamental protocols that make the internet work. Packet switching makes it possible by separating the information into pieces (like sets of bits) to transfer and put together at the end.

How do TCP/IP and packet switching make the internet possible?

client computer wants something, and that information goes from router to router until in reaches the internet server

How do routers, servers, and the client computer work together?

Once the email is sent (there is an email server involved in the process), a message is sent from server to server until it makes its way from the client to the recipients server. Also, data is sent through the internet in the form of a packetsm and routers guide them on their way.

How does email work?

mostly telephone network, copper cables (uses variations in voltage), fiber-optic cables (uses pulses of light), wireless radio connections (uses radio waves), and satellite links (uses radio waves)

How is the internet connected together?

All of the nodes must be connected together (computers, printers, etc.) and each node must have a unique name (on the internet, these addresses are called IP/internet protocol addresses.

How it all connects...the internet (2 things)

no atms or credit card transactions, no emergency communication, no online jobs or classes, law enforcement databases can't be accessed

How would an internet outage affect you?

4 numbers (ex: 192.168.0.1) assigned manually or automatically

IP addresses are made of how many numbers? (ranging from 0-255) and are assigned how?

Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn

The fathers of the internet (invented the internet) are...

IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service)

buying access to hardware over the internet, like servers or storage

protocol

an official procedure or system of rules governing whatever you are talking about; the rules computers use when they communicate to ensure they understand one another

Packet Switching

answers the question how does internet data move; info is broken into separate pieces and sent along the internet then reassembled at the end (this makes it quicker)

peripherals (secondary things?)

any device or appliance that can be linked to other devices in the network like printers, scanners, photocopiers, TVs, game systems, etc.

"in the cloud" ...google, emails like yahoo & gmail, online gaming, and data storage such as googledrive and onedrive

anything you access that is only on the internet is considered __ ___ ____ and examples are...

SaaS (Software as a Service)

applications run on someone else's system (ex: web-based email and google docs)

Internet of Things (IoT)

physical devices that have software and can connect and exchange data over the internet (makes life easier)

IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), SaaS (software as a service), PaaS (platform as a service)

the 3 types of cloud computing are...

WWW (World Wide Web)

the collection of text pages, digital photos, music files, videos, etc., accessed over the internet

latency

the delay involved in sending and receiving data between the users' devices and the cloud. Latency affects where data centers are located by making data centers closer to the coast of a country, so they be close to the undersea internet cables

nodes

the devices connected to the network

data

the information shared on the network

internet

the largest computer network in the world, connecting millions of computers (these can be standalone computer/computer networks in schools, companies, etc.)

topology

the pattern used for connecting computers together

internet backbone

the principal data routes between large, strategically interconnected computer networks and core routers on the Internet.

computer network

two or more computers that are connected via software and hardware so they can communicate with each other

file servers (hold ordinary documents), mail servers (hold emails), web server (hold web pages) and there are tens of millions of servers on the internet

types of servers

IP Address (Internet Protocol Address)

unique numeric address assigned to each device connected to a computer network

network server

computer configured with additional processing , memory, and storage capacity to handle the load of serving clients

server

computer designed to process requests and deliver data to other (client) computers over a local area network or the internet

server (serves up info)

computer that provide information or resources to the client computer

PAN, LAN, MAN, WAN

Types of networks

consistent connection, extremely fast transmission, security is easier to ensure

wired pros

renting a fully serviced apartment instead of buying a home

Think of cloud computing as...(analogy)

client

a computer on which users accomplish tasks and make requests

common communications

Computers running different operating systems can communicate on the same network

PAN (Personal Area Network)

Essentially a convenient, one-person network. Usually what you have at home.

a means of connecting the nodes on the network, special communications hardware devices for sending data, and software that allows the network to run

In order to function, all networks must include...(3 things)

the fiber optics cable can be cut which cuts off the internet, cell phones, an landlines and the data can be hacked or the headquarters broken into

In what ways is the internet vulnerable?

some rooms may have a low connection, slower performance than a wired connection, security can be compromised

wireless cons

Scotland-Northern Ireland 1 in 1989

The oldest submarine cable we could find was ____ in ___

LAN (Local Area Network)

Typically a few separate computers linked to one or two printers, a scanner, and maybe a single, shared connection to the internet. This our school network.

Latency is the delay involved in sending and receiving data between the users' devices and the cloud and bit loss is the corruption of the smallest possible amount of data and they affect the internet by making it slow or losing/changing info in the process.

What are latency and bit loss and how do they affect the internet?

routers control the movement of data (they guide the packets)

What controls the movement of data on the internet?

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is the protocol the server uses to hand out IP addresses and it's important because the if the IP addresses are handed out incorrectly, then they can't get data and communicate properly.

What is DHCP and why is it important in a network?

the difference is that there is no central computer on a peer-to-peer network.

What is the difference between peer-to-peer networks and client/server network?

Th internet(hardare)is a worldwide network of computers, linked mostly by phone lines, whereas WWW(software)is collection of text pages, digital photos, music files, videos, etc., accessed over the internet.

What is the difference between the internet and the world wide web?

it moves computerized info (data) from one place to another so that resources are shared and uses protocols. It works like the postal service)

What is the internet's job? (and what does it work like analogy)

WAN

What type of network is the internet?

Sir Tim Berners-Lee

Who invented the World Wide Web?

an internet connection, printers and other peripherals, files, and common communications

Why create a network? So we can share all sorts of stuff like...(4 things)

devices can be mobile, uses a wireless router to send signals

Wireless pros

ping

a network administration command to test connectivity to a specific device in the network using its IP address

client/server structure

a network structure with a client and a server

PaaS (Platform as a Service)

combines SaaS and IaaS; develop applications using web-based tools and run them on hardware provided by another company

licenses, virus protection, backups, storage, quickly upgrading and downgrading

data centers take care of...(5 things)

cloud computing

instead of all computer hardware and software you're using is not with you or your company but is provided as a service by another company and accessed over the internet

router

makes connections between different networks and computers on the internet (like a mailbox on the street, its your single point of entry to the worldwide network); networking device that forward data packets between computer networks on the internet (performs internet's traffic directing)

WAN (Wide Area Network)

network that can cover any geographical area

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

network that covers a whole town or city

peer to peer network

no central computer (how raspberry pi worked), each node connected on the network can communicate directly with every other node on the network

WiFi (wireless fidelity)

rather than connect cables to link networked devices, a wireless router transmits a signal picked up by the nodes on the network

direct traffic

routers _____ ____ using the devices' IP addresses

needs cables to physically run, devices need to be attached to a fixed wire

wired cons
