New York City

New York City is an amazing place to visit. More than 54 million people come to visit every year.

New York City's Five Boroughs

New York City is made of five boroughs. They are the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island.

Central Park

Central Park is a huge green area in the centre of New York. There are many lakes, theatres, fountains and sportsfields.

The Chrysler Building

The Chrysler Building is 1046 feet tall and has 77 floors. It was built in 1930.

The Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is 1,454 feet tall and has 102 floors. It was finished on March 31, 1931.

The Freedom Tower

The Freedom Tower is 1776 feet tall and has 104 floors. It is almost finished.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (colloquially The Met), located in New York City, is the largest art museum in the United States and among the most visited art museums in the world. Its permanent collection contains more than two million works, divided among seventeen curatorial departments. The main building, located on the eastern edge of Central Park along Manhattan's Museum Mile, is by area one of the world's largest art galleries.

Museum of Modern Art (MoMa)

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is an art museum located in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, on 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. It has been important in developing and collecting modernist art, and is often identified as the most influential museum of modern art in the world. The museum's collection offers an overview of modern and contemporary art, including works of architecture and design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, illustrated books and artist's books, film and electronic media.

The Subway

The New York City Subway system was first started in 1900. It opened in 1904. It has 660 miles of track, 490 stations, 6210 subway cars, 27 subway lines and more than 7 million passengers per weekday.

Times Square

This is a small square famous for its neon signs, electronic billboards and it is also the centre of theatres and cinemas.

Wall Street

This is the financial centre of New York and of the world. There is the famous New York Stock Exchange. The street has its name after the wall that once stood there. This wall was a protection against the Native Americans who lived there. It was built by the Dutch.

Statue of Liberty

This statue was sent by the French people to celebrate the 100th anniversary of America´s independence. It is made of copper, that is why it is green.

New York City's Waterways

There are ten waterways in New York City. They are the Hudson River, the East River, the Long Island Sound, Newark Bay, the Upper Bay, New York Harbor, Jamaica Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, the Harlem River and the Spuyten Dyvil.

Brooklyn Bridge

This bridge connects Manhattan with Brooklyn. It is about 1.8 mile long. There is a footpath for walkers and there are also lanes for the traffic. It was the first steel expansion bridge built in the world. It was built in 1935.

Rockefeller Center

This is a complex of commercial buildings that was built by the Rockefeller family. It is popular with tourists because there is an observation deck called the Top of the Rock. When you climb up to the deck, you can see the whole city of New York. In front of the main building, in winter season, there is a huge Christmas Tree and an ice-rink.
