Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, some athletes do not consume adequate calories to fuel appropriately for the increase in their energy expenditure. For a long time, this was thought to be only an issue for females, referred to as the female athlete triad, but it is now recognized that this issue can affect both males and females in many ways.
