According to Owens, what is the central theme of OMAM? What is he saying about this central theme? Does he want it, or believe it's what causes problems?

According to Owens, the central theme is loneliness and he is saying that the novel is not as pessimistic as some critics have suggested. He believes that George and Lennie "break the pattern of wandering and loneliness imposed on the outcasts," Since ranchers are lonely people who travel alone. We believe that Owen doesn't specially want them to be lonely, but he wants people to see that

Look up the Bible verse which asks the question, "Am I my brother's keeper?" According to William Goldhurst, as cited by Hadella, how can this verse be connected to OMAM?

Cain is his brother's keeper and the same goes for us. Each one of us is our brother's keeper and a perfect example is George and Lennie. George killed Lennie out of love, not jealousy. The story of Cain and Abel is the opposite to George and Lennies. George was responsible for his brother, Lennie. He always looked out for him even if he got on his nerves sometimes.

"The door opened and a tall, stoop-shouldered old man came in... He pointed with his right arm and out of his sleeve came a round stick-like wrist, but no hand"

According to the article, how do George and Lennie represent a "desire to defy the curse of Cain and fallen man"?

George and Lennie represent a "desire to defy the curse of Cain and fallen man" because Cain (who represents George),killed Abel (who represents Lennie). George and Lennie are like brothers like Cain and Abel are. The difference between them is Cain killed Abel out of jealousy and George killed Lennie out of love. Even though there is loneliness all around them they still manage to break the pattern and affect other people while doing it. For example Curley is suspicious of the relationship, Slim admires it, and Candy and Crooks actually engage in it.

What does Hadella mean by the statement that lennies dreams have edenic overtones?

Hadella means that Lennie's dreams have Edenic overtones because the vision of his dream (the farm) is an illusion. Because of that, it is unrealistic and will most likely not happen. It can also go wrong just how it did in the Garden of Eden.

what is crooks experience with loneliness and isolation?

He separate himself from everyone else

Hadella refers to an article by Louis Owens where he states that "there are no Edens in steinbecks writing, only illusions of Eden." What is meant by this statement?

In Of Mice and Men when they refer to Eden it can be compared to the American dream. For George and Lenny their American dream was by owning a ranch they would have a perfect life. Curley's wife can also be used to interpret the illusion of the American dream and Eden because she thought by reaching stardom her life would be perfect and she would have no struggles. Eden was said to be a perfect happy garden but within the garden there was darkness, just like the American dream everything seems to be perfect but in reality it's not as perfect as it seems.

Hadella mentions that Owen argues that OMAM is "not as pessimistic as critics have insisted." Why?

It's not as pessimistic as critics have insisted because there are many lessons people can learn from this novel. Besides the lessons that are taught it really shows the reader how incredibly important it is to have a companion and a true friendship even though it might not have the best outcome. You will always know that your friend is always trying to make the best decision for you even if it doesn't seem right. They have your best interest at heart. For example at the end of the novel when George shot Lennie, it wasn't what he wanted to do but he had to shoot him because it was the way Lennie would die at peace.

how does lennies exterior appearance match his personality?

Lennie is rough and slow

The general mindset of the roaring twenties can be best described

Live for the now

Owens argues that "although human beings are flawed and that their hopes of regaining Eden are illusory" there is something that is not flawed. What is it?

No matter how out of reach their dreams seemed, George and Lennie never gave up on it. Most importantly, they never gave up on each other. Their brotherhood and commitment to each other gets them through tough times and motivates them to keep going even when it seems hopeless. Although their dream may be unrealistic, the idea of being their brother's keeper is not flawed.

According to Hadella, why is Curley's wife's commentary "as important as sharing the dream"? From what we have discussed about Steinbeck, do you agree or disagree with this statement?

They both had a dream that they wanted people to pay attention to them. They wanted an active listener just to hear them and give them sympathy. Sometimes sharing the dream is as important as fulfilling it itself. Curley's wife had a dream of becoming an actor and she told Lennie that right before she died. Lennie had a dream of owning a farm and he told this dream to George right before he died. An example is when we shared our American Dream Bags in class and everyone clapped and showed their support. This sympathetic audience was present while we talked about our dreams as it was for Lennie and Curley's wife.
