Physical geography of South America

Patagonia desert

A region located near the tip of South America. It's in Chile and Argentina. It's in a rain shadow of the Andes mountains. It has about seven months of winter. The desert has grass, mountains, and lakes, but is still considered desert due to reduced rainfall.

Brazilian western highlands

Good for farming. Has good grass land. Formed by lava, which gave the area rich soil. The region used to be rainforest but is now farming land.

Parana river system

It starts in Brazil then goes past Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina, then finally lets out in the Atlantic Ocean. This river is about 2484 miles long.

Regions within South America

Llanos,Pampas, Patagonia desert, and Atacama desert.

Brazilian eastern highlands

Made up of low mountain ranges. They have higher elevation compared to the plateau. This area isn't as devolved as the western highlands because the mountains are hard to work around.

The Amazon basin

Most of the lakes in South America drain into it. The basin runs through Brazil,Peru, and Columbia. It also takes up a good chunk of the continent.

Angel falls

Part of the Orinoco river. Largest/tallest waterfall in the world, the top to the bottom is about half a mile long. Most of the water vaporizes by the time it gets to the bottom.

Llanos

The Llanos are really close to the equator so it's a tropic climate zone. This means that the Llanos only have two seasons,winter and summer.

Orinoco river

The Orinoco river runs through the Amazon rainforest, it separates the rainforest from the non rainforest land.

Pampas

The three countries within the Pampas are Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. This is a grassy treeless plain with rich soil that is good for farming. The Pampas are in a humid temperate climate zone.

The Andes mountains

They cover the northern and southern coast of South America. The mountains cover four different countries, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, and Chili. In the Andes there are very diverse climates. At the tops of the mountains it's very cold, but on the bottom it's very hot and dry.

Atacama desert

located on the western coast of South America. Known as the driest place on earth. They get about half an inch of water a year. In some of this region it's never rained before. It's very rocky and dry, there's no sand. Not very many animals the biggest mammal that lives there is fox. The desert is located in between two mountains, the Chilean coast range, and the Andes mountains so it's located in two rain shadows. On the opposite side of two mountains. The closest replica of Mars on earth.

Amazon river

the Amazon river runs from the Andes mountains in peru and flows east to the Atlantic Ocean through Brazil. The Amazon river is the second largest river in the world the forts is the Nile river. About 4100 miles long.
