Why has the atomic model changed over time?
Aristole's theory was incorrect and was accepted for about 2,000 years. In the 1800's John Dalton was able to prove that atoms could exist. As new discoveries and new elements are discovered the model has changed.
How is the chemical symbol of an element determined?
Elements have been named in a variety of different ways. Some symbols came from Latin. Some are named in honor or famous scientists/people,places,or for their properties.
Remember to get 1,000 points on zondle . This quizlet is on all of the worksheets, kahoot and vocab. You can use the yellow sheet and periodic table on the test.
Hope this helps :)
How are ions different from regular atoms?
It has more or fewer electrons than protons
why is the current atomic model called the "Electron Cloud Model'?
It is the area around the nucleus of an atom where its electrons are most likely found. The elctron cloud is 100,000 times larger than the diameter of hte nucleus.
Are protons, neutrons, or electrons the smallest particles? If not, what are?
No, but protons and neutrons are made up of small particles called quarks. Electrons are not copmposed of smaller particles.
What are atoms composed of
They are composed of particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons
in what way can atoms of an element be different from each other?
They can have different numbers of neutrons and electrons
Why do scientists use models to study atoms?
They use models to represent things that are difficult to vsiualize. Atoms are too small to be seen.
Who created the periodic table
a Russian chemist, Dimitri Mendeleev
The smallest particle of an element that still retains the properties of the element is the
atom
the number of protons+neutrons =______
atomic mass
number of neutrons=_________________
atomic mass-atomic number
number of electrons in a neutral atom =
atomic number
number of protons=
atomic number
the number of protons in an atom is the
atomic number
.Adding up all the masses of a sample of atoms and dividing by the number of atoms-
average atomic mass
an average of the masses of all the isotopes that occur in nature for an element is the
average atomic mass
A capital letter or a combination of a capital letter and a small letter that is used to represent an element is called a
chemical symbol
Particles surrounding the center of an atom that have a negative one charge

negatively charged particle
electron
Area around the nucleus of an atom where the atoms electrons are most likely found
electron cloud
the region around the nucleus occupied by electrons is an
electron cloud
atomic number =_______=______
protons,electrons
protons and neutrons can be subdivided into ____ by colliding them
quarks
smaller particles that make up protons and neutrons
quarks
what makes atoms of one element different from the atoms of other elements
the amount of protons
In what way are all of the atoms of an element identical?
they all have the same number of protons
elements in the middle of the periodic table, groups 4-7, are called the
transition elements
