In physics, mass can be defined as ______

an object's resistance to acceleration

In a dart gun, the spring that launches the dart has a spring constant of 2400 N/m and a normal length of 5 cm. When you push the dart into the gun, it squeezes the spring until it is 3.5 cm long. How much force (newtons) does the spring exert on the dart?

-36

Two horses are pulling a barge with a mass of 2.00 x 10^3 along a canal. The cable connected to the second horse makes an angle of 45.0 degrees. Find the initial acceleration of the barge, stating at rest, if each horse exerts a force of magnitude 6.00 x 10 ^2 N on the barge. Ignore forces of resistance on the barge.

Assume that the elastic bands on a slingshot work like a spring with a spring constant of 250 N/m (they actually follow a slightly different, though similar, law than springs). If you have to pull back with 100 N of force to hold the pouch against bands that start out 20 cm long, how long (meters) are the bands when stretched?

0.6

An object has a mass of 145 kg. What is the force of Earth's gravity on that object?

1,421.96

A 1000 kg boat moves through the water with two forces acting on it. One is a 2,000 N forward push by the water on the propeller and the other is a 1800 N resistive force due to the water drag around the bow. If it starts from rest how far will the boat move in 10.0 seconds?

10

The heaviest invertebrate is the giant squid, which is estimated to have a mass of about 2 tons (1814 kg) spread out over it's length of 70 feet. What is its weight in newtons?

17,800

An airboat with mass 3.50 x 10^2 kg, including passengers, has an engine that produces a net horizontal force of 7.70 x 10^2 N, ignoring forces of resistance. Find the acceleration of the airboat.

2.2

Your little brother pulls his 10 kg red wagon with a force of 25 N. What is the wagon's acceleration in m/s^2?

2.5

Mr. Ure has a mass of 65 kg, due to the fact that he is WAY too skinny! What is the force of Earth's gravity on him?

639

a 2000 kg car is slowed down uniformly from 20.0 m/s to 5.00 m/s is 4.00 sec. What average force acted on the car during that time?

7,500

Mr. Rees has a mass of 90 kg. How much is the force of Earth's gravity on him?

882

The air exerts a forward force of 10 N of the propeller of a 0.20 kg model airplane. If the plane accelerates forward at 2.0 m/s^2, what is the magnitude of the resistive force exerted by the air on the airplane?

9.6

An inclined plane makes and angle of 30 degrees with the horizontal. Find the constant force, applied parallel to the plane, required to cause a 15 kg box to slide up the plan with an acceleration of 1.2 m/s^2. Neglect friction forces.

91.5

Write Newtons first and second laws in your own words. For each law, give an everyday example that demonstrates the concept.

First: an object that is moving in a certain direction will continue moving in that direction unless acted upon by an external force. I think of this like a marble going down an inclined plane, if that ball is going straight the only things that's going to stop it from going straight are ridges in the plane, wind, or some sort of other external force. Second: Force is equal to mass time acceleration or F=M*A. A good example of this is a moving car. The force of the car on something is going to be the mass of the car times the acceleration. So a car going faster or a car that has more mass with have a greater force once it impacts something.
