1.Change (this is what makes it interesting) 2.Resources (Decision making over resources) 3. Common Life (Nobody can live alone) 4. Power (The currency that regulated change & Common Life-this is the key)
What are the components of a state?
1.Permanent population 2.Defined Territory 3. A Rule making system 4. Primary and ultimate CLAIM to making and enforcing rules
The major goals of states are?
1.Provide security (National security) 2. Stability-(Law & order) 3. Prosperity- (Acceptable allocation)
What is manipulation?
A Non-physical use of power in which an agent conceals his aims, intentions and desires from the second agent in order to maneuver the second agent into acting in conformity with the first agent's objectives.
International organization (IGO)
A Political organization in which membership is help exclusively by states
Concept of a nation
A group of people with a sense of fundamental unity that is based on a shared trait, attribute or costume which the group deems of elemental importance (language/ religion,culture/race/culture/religion)
Internationalism
A model of analysis that bases the proper conduct of international reflection on ethical standards given the human capacity to reason and engage in peaceful , harmonious cooperative behavior
Realism
A model of analysis that bases the proper conduct of international relations on the use of power given the human capacity for conflict violence and destruction
Mono national state
A nation that only has one overwhelming dominate nation (Denmark/ Japan)
Non-Governmental organization (NGO)
A non-state, voluntary group of people or institution united by shared opinions and interest that seeks to influence public policy

What is manifest power?
Active power that is deployed and activated
Multinational Corporations (MNO)
An International business with operations, transactions and assets in territories of different states
What is a state?
An Organization claiming the primary and ultimate ability to make and enforce order over an entire population of a given territory.
Performance
If the state performs and gives the people what they need, then it is considered proper, appropriate and legitimate.
what is latent power?
Inactive power which is held in reserve (used to influence behavior)
What is exchange?
Involving the trading of incentives in which an agent gives something of value to a second agent in return for actions from the second agent that are in conformity with the first agent's objective (The most important kind of power)
What is Power?
Is the ability of an agent to influence another agent to act in a manner that the second agent would not choose to act on his own, in order to achieve the first agent's objective

Lends money to poor countries to build infrastructure- From wealthier countries- the money comes with conditions.

States have the ability to bring their disputes voluntary but not-enforced

States respect each other- If not respected the state has the right to resist intrusion with aggression.
What is a Federal State?
States that organize governments into central (Regional & Local) levels and divide power among the different levels (Independent power Co-exist 2 levels)
What is a Unitary State?
States that organize governments into central and non-central levels of government (All the power rest at the top) (India, Canada, Argentina)
What is a con federal state?
States/ Systems where power is decentralized and held primary or exclusively at the regional or local level (Power held at the bottom-Does not work) all power is local.
What is Sovereignty?
The actual ability to function as the ultimate rule-making, rule-enforcing organization.
Legitimacy
The belief by the people that the sovereign state operating over them is proper/ rightful/ appropriate and acceptable.
international Law
The body of customs treaties and generally accepted rules that define the rights and obligation of states when dealing with one another.
Define Values
Values are those things that people deem important- can be material things or services or symbols (A house, car, food, status, healthcare, ideas, education, respect)
Sovereign Equality of all states
We treat each other with respect so the need for force is unnecessary.
Politics
is all about power and the allocation of resources
