Spirometer

A device that measures the respiratory volumes.

Inspiratory reserve volume

It is the amount of air that can be inspired forcefully beyond the resting tidal volume. 3000 mL

Expiratory reserve volume

It is the amout of air that can be expired forcefully beyond the resting tidal volume. 1100 mL

Functional residual capacity

It is the expiratory reserve volume plus the residual volume. The amount of air remaining in the lungs at the end of a normal expiration 2300mL.

Spirometry

It is the process of measuring volumes of air that move into and out of the respiratory system

Forced expiratory vital capacity

It is the rate at which lung volume changes during direct measurement of the vital capacity. Individual inhales maximally and exhales maximally in spirometer.

Vital capacity

It is the sum of the inspiratory reserve volume, tidal bolume, expiratory reserve volume. Maximum volume of air that a person can expel from the respiratory tract after a maximum inspiration. 4600mL

Total lung capacity

It is the sum of the inspiritaory and expiratory reserves and the tidal and residual volumes. or Vital capacity plus residual volume. All volumes. 5800 mL

Inspiratory capacity

It is the tidal volume plus the inspiratory reserve volume. The amount of air can inspire maximally after a normal experiation. 3500 mL

Tidal volume

It is the volume of air inspired or expired with heach breath. 500mL

Residual volume

It is the volume of air still remaining in the respiratory passages and lungs after maximum expiration. 1200 mL

500

Normal Tidal volume (ml)

1100

Normal expiratory reserve volume

3500

Normal inspiratory capacity (Tidal volume+Inspiratory reserve volume)

3000

Normal inspiratory reserve volume

5800

Normal total lung capacity. (all four)

4600

Normal vital capacity (inspiratory reserve+tidal volume+expiratory reserve volume)

Respiratory volumes

They are measures of the amount of air movement during different portions of ventilation

Respiratory capacities

They are the sums of two or more respiratory volumes.

Anatomical dead space

Volume of passageways where gas exchange does not occur at all.

2300

normal residual capacity (expiratory reserve+residual)

1200

normal residual volume
