Richter Scale

- Developed by Charles F. Richter in 1934. It used a formula based on amplitude of the largest wave recorded on a specific type of seismometer and the distance between the earthquake and the seismometer. - Amplitude is measured in mm. - Distance is measured in km. - Additionally, can be measured in kilograms of TNT.

Mercalli Scale

- Intensity scale is a seismic scale used for measuring the intensity of an earthquake. It measures the effects of an earthquake, and is distinct from the moment magnitude usually reported for an earthquake (sometimes misreported as the Richter magnitude), which is a measure of the energy released.
